Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone could help me put together a "dream setlist".
By this, I mean a setlist of classic surf/oldie instrumental tunes and
new surfy tunes where the expected classics are included as well as
some really great newer songs that an audience might like to hear
covered in a surf rock style.
From this, I hope to cull together a great setlist for our band
that'll really rock the house. Any input is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
hey,
I suppose you'd have to start with the standards:
wipeout
run don't walk
pipeline
surf rider
secret agent man
killer dana
sleepwalk
miserlou
ghost riders
apache
I'm not sure about new ones...
anyone?

Well, there are lots of folks better qualified to give
you the staples of old, but as far as new goes I'd
like to throw in my two pennies.
This is by no means "definitive", just a few of my
personal picks.
"Camp Blood" - Gein and The Graverobbers (I love that
song.)
While I'm speaking of the horror genre, "Haulin'
Hearse" by The Ghastly Ones. (Whatever happened to
them?)
"Mouth Full of Exhaust," "Bermuda Triangle Shorts," or
"Theme From Eviac" by Man or Astroman. There are
other MoAM cuts too, just can't think of any right
now...
"Vertigo" by Johnny and The Shamen
"Tempest" by Los Straitjackets
There are a number of other cuts, the names of which I
can't recall right now, that I've either downloaded or
gotten on comps by The Nebulas, The Cave IV, The
Krontjong Devils (Where are these guys? I really like
them), The Honkeys (I think "The Wayback Machine", but
all their cuts are good), Big Ray and The Futuras, The
Penetrators, The Supertones...I guess band names don't
help you much with your dream set list though.
I'll throw in a couple of votes for the oldies too,
what the heck: "Bad News" by The Trashmen and
"Penetration" by The Pyramids.
Oh yeah, and "Time Bomb" by The Avengers IV.
Richard

You are missing some Astronauts: The Hearse, Movin', Baja
I 2nd the Ghastly Ones.
You need some Satan's Pilgrims in there too: Surf Lyre is burned into my
brain as of late.
(I too would gladly eat 50 cheeseburgers and wear a cape to play in a
Satan's Pilgrims cover band. And I'm a vegetarian...)
The Lively Ones: High Tide, Steel Pier, Goofy Foot
Those crazy Apemen deserve a song or two in there.
Fathomless by the Fathoms still gives me the heebie-jeebies.
The Space Cossacks and Slacktone if you can pull off covers of their stuff.
Wow. (MuSick should release that live Space Cossacks material, damn-it!!!)
Jon & The Nightriders have some cool originals too. "Depth Charge" anyone?
The Nebulas!!!
I love Laika & The Cosmonauts hyped up version of Bah-ha-ree-ba too.
So many choices... I don't know how you could come up with "the" dream
setlist.

Hey James, if you don't alreay have it, get the
Cowabunga: War of the Surf Guitars compilation from
Golly Gee Records. Some of the best money I ever
spent and you can get a lot of great tunes off it.
I've also got most of "Camp Blood" by Gein and the
Graverobbers tabbed out (correctly, I think, I may
post it here if anybody is familiar with the song) if
you'd like I could send it to you.
