John, I Knew about these old bands, I thought he was asking if people
are
Playing Surf currently!
>>>Big Tiki Dude sed:
[are there many true instro surf bands over there?]
At the time these Bands were happening here in Hawaii,
'63-'64 I was still in Pasadena.
You might of heard of my Mother...The little old lady?
So, I was not aware of the bands back then, but, like all of you,
I have a passion for SURF MUSIC and with a little digging, I found
Out about what was happening here, back then.
Well anyway, I have lived on the Big Island for 25 years now, and I
Snatch up LP's wherever I see them, I have found a few nice surfing
Albums too. I do have one of the "Battle of the Bands" at the Waikiki
Shell. Also, I have found out that I know a lot of the guys that were
In those bands!
One of the guys I work with, was in one of the bands, he didn't even
Know there was an album from the event. He is our staff auto mechanic.
Back in those days, he was a Honolulu Cop. I'll ask him which band he
was in.
Another guitarist from that "Battle", is John Keawe. He was in the
Telstars.
He lives here in Kohala. He is quite successful, musically, he has made
quite a few CD's and a couple of his Slack-Key (Instrumental) Albums
have won him several Hoku Awards here in the Hawaiian Music scene.
>>>Among them,
Moptops
Telstars
Stardels
Road Runners
Spiedels
Kona Casuals
Star Lighters
Royal Malads
Statics
>>>And many others. A lot of these bands were documented in a couple of
very rare recordings from '63 and '64 of a Battle of the Bands staged at
the
Waikiki Shell each of those two years.
I am still looking for the second Battle of the Bands Album.
Do any of you have any leads?
>>>There were also a number of singles
released on the Teen label out of Honolulu and at least one single on
the
Maholo label by Tom Moffatt (also released as by Dick Jensen, although
I've
not yet been able to ascertain why). I think Moffatt may have been a
local
radio disk jockey.
Tom Moffatt was and still is, THE rock promoter of Hawaii. A wonderful
man.
He has been putting on shows forever. He is still alive and well, and
still
Putting on great shows. One that I really enjoyed (in recent history)
Was Oingo Boingo and Joe Satriani. That was when Joe did his Surfing
with the Alien album.
>>>It's possible that most of the surf band action in Hawaii may have
been
concentrated on Oahu for some reason (that is, after all, where all the
popular surfing spots are in the islands).
john blair
For the Battle of the Bands, there were bands that came from all the
islands. Hawaii is a very musically oriented place, and we don't mind
"Island hopping" to go hear some good sounds.

There's a Hawaiian band called "Hapa" (a duo). One of their CDs, "Surf
Madness" has several surf covers and originals... it's not bad. I think
they mostly do trad Hawaiian tunes with a rock/roll infusion, if that
makes sense.

Clint,
I had forgotten about "Hapa"! But, I forget a lot.
Hapa did do some really nice instro work.
It is two acoustic guitars.
"hapa" in Hawaiian means "half Hawaiian/half other" in the bloodlines.
There are lots of Hawaiian songs related to surf, mostly vocals,
"Big Island Surf" "Surf" by various local groups, the music is
currently more influenced by Raggae Rhythms, than reverb.
Also, Kelly Slater, a pro surfer, did an album called
"The Surfers ~ songs from the pipe" but this was an album of ballads.
No reverb here...

Ferenc, Actually, this is an angle that has worked for us well!
A lot of guys from the old era are turning "Fifty" and I have
Suggested they have a "5-0" Party for their celebration, and they
Love the idea. We have done three Hawaii 5-0 parties so far.
Our debut performance was one of these! Back in 1999.
Of course, it is an Aloha/Tiki theme with Surf Music.
I got a Hawaii 5-0 Badge artwork and enlarged it and put it on the side
Of the car that was bringing guests up to the house, it looked like a
Real cop car. We had a kid shuffling the guests up, he gave them a shell
Lei when they were getting in the car.
One thing that did freak me out, the lady that owned the car, continued
To drive it around the island for a couple of weeks, I thought she was
going
To get busted for impersonating a police vehicle!
(I did get a photo of this)
Laters and Aloha,
Kim
