>>>Hey Kim, you are in Hawaii right??
That's right!
>>>if so what island?
I live on the Big Island, which is actually the island called Hawaii.
>>>And are there many true instro surf bands over there?
I have never heard of any, even on the other islands.
I have a surf band that is called Solar Wind.
We only do a few gigs a year.
Namely, The Tiger Espere Longboard Surf Contest in Kawaihae.
Mostly old surfers on old boards, with us old guys playing old tunes.
It is a blast! Actually, the whole contest is family oriented, so there
Are heats for all ages, but it has to be a longboard.
One event is, you have to ride a board that is 1965 or older.
>>>When I went to Kauai in 97, I asked some traditional Hawiian players
>>>if there was any surf bands on the Island. He said in the late
80's
>>>and early 90's but they didn't play much. Because most of the
>>>venues for live music wanted Hawiian/Reggae/or Pop music.
>>>i.e. no market for it, so they broke up.
This is true.
>>>Did you see the Mermen a few years ago, when they played over there.
>>>I believe they played on Oahu and Maui.
Yes I did! I have always been a HUGH Mermen fan, and I was thrilled
To hear they were coming to Hawaii!
My wife and I flew to Maui, just to see them. It was awesome.
It was my birthday, too. What a treat!
>>>Aloha and Mahalo,
>>>Jeff(bigtikidude)
>>>No I'm not Hawiian but I di have Polynesian paralisys :)
Aloha to you, too.

There's a Hawaiian band called "Hapa" (a duo). One of their CDs, "Surf Madness"
has several surf covers and originals... it's not bad. I think they mostly do
trad Hawaiian tunes with a rock/roll infusion, if that makes sense.

I'm surprised that Kim isn't aware of the many sixties' Hawaiian surf
bands. Among them,
Moptops
Telstars
Stardels
Road Runners
Spiedels
Kona Casuals
Star Lighters
Royal Malads
Statics
And many others. A lot of these bands were documented in a couple of very
rare recordings from '63 and '64 of a Battle of the Bands staged at the
Waikiki Shell each of those two years. There were also a number of singles
released on the Teen label out of Honolulu and at least one single on the
Maholo label by Tom Moffatt (also released as by Dick Jensen, although I've
not yet been able to ascertain why). I think Moffatt may have been a local
radio disk jockey.
It's possible that most of the surf band action in Hawaii may have been
concentrated on Oahu for some reason (that is, after all, where all the
popular surfing spots are in the islands).
