HOT Seymours

surfbandbill - 23 Jan 2003 03:16:47

Greetings all,
I just installed some Seymour Duncan "Vintage for Jaguar" pickups
into my Japanese '62 reissue Jag, and I absolutely LOVE them! The
tone, brightness, and low-end punch have filled out my sound
beautifully. (thanks Dano, for insisting that I take the plunge and
buy some, it was worth every penny) However, I'm having one little
problem...
Whenever I hit my overdrive pedal I get a lot of feedback. Even if
it's just a short, muted chord, all of a sudden, this wave of
feedback wells up.
Anyone else experience this?? I'll do a quick piece-by-piece of my
setup to see if anyone might have any suggestions:
MIJ '62 Jag w/SD vintage pickups and a buzzstop
Danelectro Daddy-O overdrive
Dan-echo delay pedal
Fender Reverb Tank (Dwell: 5, Mixer: 6, Tone: 5)
'64 Fender Twin Reverb (Bass: 5.5, Mid: 6, Treb: 6.5)
Could it be a matter of switching the pedal positions? I know I have
the reverb off on my amp, because at first I thought that might have
been the cause. But no, everything seems kosher -- no different than
when I had the stock Japanese PUs in there.
Any thoughts?

Hi Bill,
I cant help; but I know of this problem.
It can be because you will have to reset the overdrive pedal. The output
of the SD is a lot higher then the stock Japanese pick ups.
Also I never used the volume or tone knobs when I had my stock Japanese
Pick-ups installed, but now with the SD pick-ups I see the use for them.
I cut off a bit of volume and a bit of tone to get a more controlable
sound.
There is also the following. I used the stock Japanese pick ups in
anoher guitar and used CTS pots of 1 meg in them as in the Jazz/Jag and
to my amazament the Japanese pick-ups sound a lot better in this cheap
guitar then in my Jazzmaster. So I guess that the pots used in the
Japanese Jazz/Jag are not as good. I haven't tried yet, but I will see
what happens if I replace the pots in my CIJ Jazzmaster and how it will
affect the sound.
The wiring, although with the same result is different in Japanese
Jazz/Jag then in American. For instance the cap is connected betwwen the
volume and tone knob on the MIJ/CIJ guitars, but when you look at the
original Fender and Seymour Duncan wiring schema you will see thet the
Cap is only connected on the tone knob. Indeed there is a conection
between the Vol and Tone knob as well, but it's not made by the cap.
