Rock'N'Roll HoF Rant...

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 28 Nov 2005 18:23:00

I spent some time cruisin' the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame's site, checking on this
year's
nominees. And, I found myself getting more and more perturbed. How does Miles
Davis win a
place in the hall while Link Wray, Dick Dale, and other surf and proto-surf
artists get ignored
year after year?
Granted, Miles was a great jazz musician/arranger, but I find his influence on
rock to be a
passing one, at best. Meanwhile, Dale and Wray, The Chantays and Surfaris, and
instro surf
music in general continues to influence rock music, right up to and including
mondo-popular
bands like Pixies, Chris Isaac, Green Day, etc.
Back in the 1950s, rock displaced jazz as the music of youth, and by the time
Miles Davis was
hitting his stride, jazz was middle-class and highbrow, not the music of
rebellious teens.
That's rock, in my book.
One other thing: on the R'n'R HoF website, there is a purported timeline of rock
history. Surf
music gets recognition for an era (1960-1970, which seems a little too long for
the first-
wave), but no specific milestones except for those of the Beach Boys!
This leads me to conclude...music "historians" and critics suck.

Thats' why I believe Rock is DEAD! Simply becaise the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame (and the stupid old Rolling Stone
Magazine) are both
money-making-mall-sellin'-middle-of-the-road ...
well, i think you get the idea...the RNR HOF people are not
really the rebellious teen sort of people. they are old
money grubbers...
RNR Hall of fame is sort of meaningless anyway...most the
people I think are truly great and "legendary" aren't
there...and most of the acts that I think suck are
there...so...
we might as well be crying about why more surf tunes don't
win grammy awards or something...
cynically yours,
-dp

there was an article in the paper i think last year, basically stating that the
RnR hof is a giant scam. This lady runs it, and just plans this one night, and
makes about 300 G's as her salary. i forget the rest though.
