reverb unit, Showman cabs, etc.

ipongrac - 27 Nov 2005 15:24:28

Hey all!
First of all, thanks to Klas for bringing up the Dumb Angel Gazette
#4 - I meant to buy that some time ago, and forgot - well, I quickly
remedied that mistake. I'll have some fun Christmas reading this
year! BTW, Klas, I believe there was some talk about that DD promo
movie here a while ago. I seem to remember John Blair saying
something about it when I inquired whether this movie was ever
released. I think he said it exits, but is very rare. Look through
the archives.
Second, check out this link, and dig it:
Third, the ongoing saga of my reverb unit: I asked about it on this
list last Tuesday; Wednesday I fired it up and had it on for two
hours, and I'd go and play it periodically, and - nothing; sounded
just fine; Friday I took it to a band practice, and it sounded
fine. I'm sure it's gonna go nuts the next time I'm playing a gig
with it! Isn't that the way these things go? Anyway, thanks to
everyone for their 2 cents - I believe that it's a tube problem
rather than the pan, as I originally thought.
(Where does everyone get their NOS reverb tank tubes? Is there one
best source for them? It's been a while since I got them, and I
don't even remember where.)
Finally, I've given up, and given in. I'm one of 'them' now. You
know, 'them' with vintage Showman amps... I purchased an original-
JBL-D130F-loaded 1x15", tone-ring cabinet from 1968 (the final year
they were made), and the single Showman head will be next. As soon
as I can track one down. Anyway, I got the cab yesterday. It's
beat to hell, but I plugged it into my Dual Pro, and the sound that
poured forth was TO DIE FOR. Wow. Absolutely incredible. The bass
response will get me lynched by my neighbors, but hell, it'll be
worth it. The best part is that I got this cab for only $325 (plus
$50 shipping!) Hell of a deal considering that those speakers go
for $200-250 alone. Anyway, the problem now is how to fit that cab
in the car along with my guitar, head, and my wife and my dog (since
we usually go together to Indiana for a weekend for band practices
and/or shows). haven't figured it out yet... Until then, I'll just
keep playing it at home and smile...

These guys are highly recommended:
Congrats on the Showman cab! I too, wonder how the hell I will ever
get mine out of the basement!

I haven't carried my Showman cab since about early June. The trick is
make sure the other guys or gals or wives get to carry it in.

My favorite tube vendor is Antique Electronic Supply:

I use them for parts for my stereo amps, but the catalog has a huge guitar amp

I've bought several tubes from KCA NOS - their prices aren't cheap but
their tubes have all been good quality as advertised. The owner Mike
seems well-informed and will take the time to listen to you and offer
advice They also do a great job on amps if you need repairs or a cap
job. Have also had good experience with Tubemonger -

I have bought many NOS 6K6 tubes from the 1950s, early '60s, on Ebay for around
$5-$6. These were RCA and GE, and really work/sound great.
Another note, if you are planning to use a 6K6 in an application that
calls for a 6v6, watch for red hot plates in the 6k6 as they are only rated
for {I think}415v.

I'm a big eBay fan, but I've read too many stories of people getting ripped off
on NOS tube auctions. Some sellers are just ignorant of what they are selling,
but others are counterfeiting NOS by buying Chinese or Yugo tubes and
re-packaging them in reproduction tube boxes.

Dave,
First, your warning is right on.... always watch
the tubes closely when you substitute something
that was not the original specification. No better
advice can be stated when doing experiments like this.
Next, I know you said "I think", but maybe you just
made a typo: the max plate voltage for a 6K6 is 315
volts, not 415. However, the 6V6 is listed at only
350 volts max, so probably in most cases, one would
stress a 6K6 only a little bit, if the 6V6 had been
running near or at the 6V6's maximum allowed voltage.
(These specs apply to all versions of their respective
tubes.)
Side note: FWIW, Electro-Harmonix is bringing out new
versions of some of the old tubes that are allegedly
rated to run at higher plate voltages and current
levels. Might be worth looking into.
As it happens though, the 6G15 circuit calls for only
300 volts out of the power supply, and after going
through the choke and the transformer, it's reduced
down to something like 285 volts, easily low enough
to let a 6K6 run efficiently without fear of harming
it. (Ditto for the 6F6 and other tube types, for
you experimenters out there.)

At the risk of sounding like a bone head, what exactly is a NOS tube?
Are these newly manufactured, or tubes that have been sitting on a
shelf for 40 years unused?
When I've retubed (and it's been a loong time, I usually go to the
local guitar shop and buy Sovtek's.

They are sitting on the shelf for the past how many years, unless I am
very wrong. They are new of the old stock.

Spanky,
In retail terms, New Old Stock is that which was made
beaucoup years ago, but somehow escaped ever being sold
at retail. Since said items have never before been sold
across the retail counter, they can legally be called "new".
But as has already been pointed out by others, there
are some unscrupulous operators out there. Look for
referrals from friends first, or on lists like this one.
And there's nothing wrong with new tubes that weren't
made 30 or 40 years ago. The bottom line is, use what
sounds best to you, not what sounds best to someone else
- unless they're paying for your tubes! <g>

Right. The term was first coined in the auto restoration business. New Old Stock
is:
an unused part (New)
from a bygone era (Old)
factory, not replica (Stock) part.
Lots of people think that vintage tubes sound "better" than modern construction,
or are better constructed. I generally don't like Chinese and Yugoslavian tubes,
but have been happy with Russian (Sovtek and Svetlana) modern construction.
There's a whole subculture of tube collectors out there. Not that I know any of
them...
