Dick Dale early 1963 concert footage

Klas Fjellgren (surfites_64) - 27 Nov 2005 13:54:50

I just finished reading the article "Dick Dale & his Del-Tones rule L.A.
1961-'63!" (Dumb Angel No. 4) and there's talk about a Capitol financed promo
film. Quote from the article:
"Capitol financed a promotional film titled King Of The Stomp where Dick Dale &
his Del-Tones play four songs live at Harmony Park Ballroom in Anaheim."
Anyone ever seen this film?
/ Klas

Ivan, I did a quick search through the list archives but only found
the discussion about DDs appearance in the 1963 "A Swingin' Affair"
movie (where he also performed Miserlou).
Anyway, here are some more details on the promo film that turned up
in another of the "Dumb Angel No. 4" Domenic Priore written articles
(Harmony Park vs. Retail Clerks Hall: Battle of the Orange County
surf bands).
"[...] and a thirteen-minute live Dick Dale & his Del-Tones
performance film "King Of The Stomp" [...] shot at Harmony Park
Ballroom on Friday, March 22nd 1963 [...] "King Of The Stomp" kicks
right into a searing hot on-stage version of "Miserlou" [...] The
crowd is on stun from the outset, going for some wild R&B dance moves
and literally pogoing to "Miserlou"."
Sounds like this could be an awesome way to experience DD in his
prime for us who wasn't around back then!
Anyone interested in the great "Dumb Angel No. 4" mag can get it here:
Here's a cool spread from the "DD rule..." article:

The film exists. It was shot in 16mm on March 22, 1963 at the Harmony Park
Ballroom. It was never formally released in any form to my knowledge. It
exists today only as a bootleg video. There's a little more info about
this in my book (see the Introduction, page x). The real question is
whatever happened to the "other" 16mm film that was made at the same time,
a 3 min. performance of "Misirlou" that accompanied a demonstration of the
Stomp (or "Surfer's Stomp" as the case may be).
