are there any websites that deal with or does anyone know a good
deal about basslines for surf songs? not one song specifficaly but
in general. is there a certain walking bassline pattern or is the
bass player basically playing the root of the chords? any help is
appreciated.
I had the same question a while back. It's mainly the
half-step hammer on the root, or just the root, or a
triad. Every song is a little different. Funny thing
is that even though I'm primarily a bass player I've
only been learning the guitar parts to surf songs.
There's a really good website out there that has all
the "Play With The Ventures" albums on it that has all
the bass tracks that you can hear seperately and
follow along with. I'd start with that. I don't
think it was ever really established here that there
was a formula per se.

Hi,
Thanks for the Bass link. I'm struggling with the same problem here.
Although I play guitar, I'm interested in Bass as well.
Would it be a good idea to post some Bass tabs on Surf 101 as well?
Since I started listening to the Bass lines as well, ( a real
improvement for my guitar playing as well) I found that most surf Bass
lines are quiet fascinating on their own.
So any help regarding these will be most welcome.
Jerry

hi guys,
from what i get from my cd collection (which is not to impressive, to be
sure) is that the bass either plays:
- the root-note in the Miserlou rythm (1 &3 1 &3 )
- root - third - fifth - third (either on the beat or in 3+3+3 8/8 rythm)
- or root - fifth - root - fifth (usually with a low fifth, for a more
mellow approach....)
'm guessing this covers about 70% of the songs...
but that's just a start in case you're stuck for ideas, everyone should feel
free to take in in any direction they want, obviously.
one thing i learned though, is that it's very, very, very easy to overdo the
bass in surf. esp with a guitarist on bass and/or writing the basslines.
my personal favorite in surf bass is when the bass plays basically just
around the root-notes and does little thingies to fill the empty spaces in
the melody - sort of tailgaiting... (the bambi molestors intensity has some
good examples)
