putting the dick in Dick Dale

Robb Lowe (robbhatesit) - 25 Nov 2005 16:39:37

I've read countless stories on here and cowabunga about how DD is a total Dick
to everyone.
Does anyone have a GOOD story about him? And is there any ideas on why he's king
of the
dicks?
A good friend of mine was lead guitarist for one of the biggest country acts on
the 80-90's,
we were talking about different acts and how they were off stage. Surprisingly,
he said
VInce Gill and Steve Wariner were both dicks. Maybe it's something to do with
knowing you're
a hot shit picker that does it to you.
If that's true, I'm the least dick like person you'll ever meet LOL. (not a hot
shit picker)

He's a complex guy. I once was fortunate enough to hang out with him at
his house for a couple of hours and onserve him away from the stage.
While it was very enlightening personality-wise, he was very gracious
and very generous.
We talked about arranging songs, particularly why virtually every cover
of "Surf Beat" is unlike the original, and a bit of historical stuff. I
played him a cassette of the only only song I ever wrote, and he
transposed it to piano and played it. He also shared some unreleased
demos, including the MTV Europe Logos he cut. As I was leaving, he
pulled out an uncirculated copy of "Miserlou" and gave it to me. He
also looked around for a Dick Dale shirt, but did not find any, so he
took one out of his closet and gave it to me - a DD shirt he had worn
often.

This thread comes up every now and then and often gets misconstrued as
"SG101 is bashing DD". I should mention that if you talk to Dick after
one of his shows during his "meet & greet" session, he is an extremely
nice and funny guy. Both Ferenc and DP have met him in other contexts
and have shared their experiences here.
I think he's just one of those single track mind misunderstood genius
types. An odd guy, for sure, but we would miss him if he was gone. If
only we could convince him to do a "go back to your roots" record.
With rhythm guitar... ;-)

Ed,
I don't think I said he's a regular guy, and he didn't start "it"
exactly. Dick was thee major early bird for sure, but not the first. He
is a long way from being a regular guy. He's complex, has regular
moments, can be very gracious, but he also can be really strange and
has a well-documented past you might not want in a neighbor.
He's very interesting, can be quite disarming, and can also really put
you off. We all have different sides. He's just a little more so. You
have to respect his accomplishments, his amazing music, and the legend
he's cultivated.

Twangler (twangler23) - 27 Nov 2005 02:44:18

About 5 years ago when I lived in B'ham AL he played at the Nick.
Around 6pm, my wife and I went by the hotel to pick up Dusty and Ron
for dinner and then take them to the club. The Nick had put them up in
a real crappy Days Inn or something. Anyhow, Dusty had to ask him
something before we left so we went down to his room and hung out for
about 5 or 10 minutes. He was quite nice and had no idea how to get to
the club so I had to give him directions. If you've never been to the
Nick, it's not real easy to find -especially when you can't exactly
remember street names. Most of you know DD waits until the last
possible minute to show up before hitting the stage so I stood in the
crowd that night wondering if I had inadvertently got him lost in
'crack town.' He made it.
After the show, he got a little weirdish and I unfortunately missed one
of his 'I invented everything' stories but a friend and my wife heard
the whole thing.
On another occasion, when The Penetrators opened for him in Atlanta we
were talking to him about something and I can't remember exactly what
he said, but as we walked away Trace or Rip quipped "That's what you
call putting the 'Dick' in Dick Dale" to much laughter.
In 95 or so, DD played the Point in Atlanta. We drove from Tuscaloosa
(3 hours) to see him only to find out it was a rare ticketed show, and
was sold out. We called the club and somehow word got to him how far we
had driven and that we were in a band on the "Dickheads" tribute album
and he put us on his guest list because 'if anybody's going to drive
that far to see me, they ought to get in' we were told he said.
Everybody has their moments. I've run across a lot of musicians far
more Dickish than DD.

Ed,
I met Dick for an interview. First, he made it clear he didn't have long to
talk. Then, he
warmed up and talked for hours. This is unusual for a celebrity, and as long as
the subject
was Dick, there wasn't really any point in asking questions. He would run for
30-40
minutes answering one question.
I've done a great many celebrity interviews, and Dick was a very good subject.
He had
many great stories to tell, even though I'd heard a lot of them previously. He
was very
generous with his time, and he even gave me a pewter Dick Dale pin, which was
kind.
Overall, I found him egotistical and self-absorbed - but there was truth to
everything he
had to say.
Like Brian said, he is a bit of an odd fellow, but very talented and a pioneer,
if you will. I
think he would have liked a bigger place in rock'n'roll history, and those of us
who love
surf probably agree, he deserves more recognition. Often, the successful
musician is
successful exactly because he or she or they recognize the importance of self
promotion.
Dick is simply a master of this. And a very admirable musician, to boot.

I guess I started this whole thing...but only in rememberance of Link
Wray. I guess my mistake was in summoning his "Dickness" and comparing
the two. I wasn't necessarily trying to put down Dick Dale, I was
merely pointing out that in the whole "backstsage experience with a
living guitar legend" thing was a lot more comfortable, laid back, and
a lot less egotistical with Mr. Wray. So I made an (unoriginal) pun
with Mr. Dale's name and now we've forgotten the whole point. My
apologies. I actually came to Dick's defense during the whole
"Slacktone plays a better Miserlou" inspired DD bash that happened a
few months ago. I greatly admire what he did in the 60s and would
never want to detract from that.
