Hello - from new member

Audun Kristiansen (audieak) - 18 Nov 2005 05:23:24

Yes, hello.
Just wanted to introduce myself as a new member. My name is Audun
Kristiansen, 25 years of age and I'm from Norway.
Been listening to surf music since about 1995 after I saw Pulp
Fiction, but have always loved instro guitar music - listened to The
Shadows as a kid (just one album my dad forgot to tell the record club
he did't want). I collect music from norwegian shadowbands from the
60's - like The Vanguards etc. Translated they call it "barbed wire-
music" here due to a tune from a band called The Falcons (great song
by the way).
A lot of obscure bands as "everybody" played this style at that
time. But surf is the best! I'm following the posts here with great
interest and learn new things every day.
Thanks.
Audun.

Audun,
Welcome to the group!
Can you tell us about the Norwegian bands? Is there an active surf
scene in Norway?
One of my favorite bands is Norway's Beat Tornados. That "Mission to
Mir" CD is just killer...!
Pick up the new Double Crown "Continental Magazine" for a great
interview with The Beat Tornados by our own Ivan Pongracic. Plus they
have a track on the included CD.

Hey.
The norwegian surf scene is not very big. When I say "surf music" to
people they answer: "Oh, the beach boys..." That's how it is.
I know of only two bands active today. There are probably more but
not that known. You have The Beat Tornados - as you mentioned - and
Los Plantronics which has a more mexican spaghetti style. They have
three albums out (I think). I live inland, so no big surf community
here, but I know that in Stavanger (by the coast) people do actually
surf. With wetsuits because of the freezing water. They might have
more local surf bands there. More on that can be seen in the
norwegian motion picture "Monstertorsdag" (Monster Thursday) which
takes place in that community.
Trailer here:
Mainly it's a love story. It actually has a couple of Dick Dale
tunes
on the soundtrack.
I must look for that magazine in the stores here. Hope they have it.
Thanks for the tip!

Audun,
Great to have you aboard,
My family herritage is from Norway. But we've been here almost
100 years now. I'd like to go there someday to see where we came
from. But I've heard that it's pretty expensive to travel around
there. Is this true?
thanks,
Jeff (bigtikidude) Hanson , used to be Hansson but was changed
when My Great grandfather came to the US.

Yup - and when you listen to some of the Reventlos' creations, you can
REALLY see how this all works!

Thanks for all the welcoming words.
Not many black metal surf bands here, but a lot of pure black metal
bands. You might not tell from the pictures there, but these are the
nicest people around :-) They don't harm a fly, but take it all out
in their music. At least the people I know.
Brian: Thanks for the links to the magazines. The lady in the news
stand looked at me like I was some kind of moron.
Jeff: Hanson? I know some Hansons up in Colorado. But that is a
common norwegian name. The prices here are pretty high. I'm kind of
used to them, but every tourist in the summer that gets interviewed
on TV or in the paper mentiones the prices. But don't let that stop
you from taking a trip!
Phil: Reverbcentral has been in my bookmarks for many years now and
it rules! Loved your show too. Regular netcast listener though it
aired at 4 am on sunday. By the way: how long does it take KFJC to
ship those surf compilations? I donated so I could get every one of
them back in the beginning of september, but I haven't gotten them
yet. Have mailed them and even called, but no word on the status.
Was that 375 dollars down the drain?
And - embarassing as it is - I have never seen a surf band play
live. 99% of concerts are in Oslo and to travel down there gets to
be a project of its own. But I'm working on it:-)
Audun.

your town ;-)

I tried to play guitar once, and learn a few songs... It's just one
thing... I SUCK! I learned Misirlou though :-) But I compensate by
sneaking in surf songs on my radio show. I have a show about
films/movies one hour a week at a local station here and when a surf
song is featured in anything I play it. The station is heavily
formatted, but I say it is related to what I'm talking about so then
it's OK.
I also work in the local branch of the norwegian broadcasting
company (only as an assistant), but next summer I'm planning to get
my hands on one of the summer-temp slots they have (airs
nationally), and make it a show with surf music. They might go for
it, they might not. Only time will tell. It's worth a shot.
Audun.
PS: R.I.P Link Wray.
