Re: [SurfGuitar101] Fender Reverb Units been there and done that.........

John McCorvey (eddiekatcher) - 17 Nov 2005 20:08:38

My first experience with RFI in a reissure tank was when we opened for the
Beach Boys at the Ntelos pavillion in Portsmouth VA.. I had never had a
problem with one prior to that and I thought mine always sounded damn
good....However when we got ready for sound check my unit ( and Mitch's unit)
was picking up some FM station to beat the band....That signal was loud.....I
was pissed.....Then later we played here in Atlanta a the Cotton Club and it
did it again......damn.....shortly there after I replaced the input jack in
Tone Boy's (from the Mariners) tank and noticed that Fender had changed the PCB
layout!!!! I thought Ah Ha! , they did have a problem and have now fixed it
so.......I went out and bought a brand new one......The next time we were at
the Cotton Club, which had by then moved to a new location, I used the new
unit and guess what, more FM radio...I went to work on that first unit trying
all sorts of things from filter circuits to chokes on the ac cord.
When I used a UPS on the AC line it was much quieter. I tried all sorts of
shielding and never could eliminate the problem.....I called Dan Torres and he
said that some of the units were problematic but that he had not looked into
the problem.....Now guys, don't get me wrong, those RI units are the best
surf bargin since Fender quit making the PTP wired ones......After that, I
forked out too much money for the '65 that I now use all the time.....I have
never heard anything but sweet spash out of it. I sold the second unit and
kept the original which is probably 10 years old or so. Other than this, I
never had a problem with any of them that putting back the tubes that fell out
wouldn't cure......I sill think the Fender tanks are the best sounding and most
touch sensitive units ever made....I even use mine the wedding band I play
in......gotta have guts to admit to that.......eddie k wrote:
I currently own 3 Fender reverb tanks, two vintage 60's units and one of
the 90's reissues. None of these have ever broken down, squealed, picked
up radio stations, or needed serious and costly maintenance.
I've had them all for many years. They sound fine and the only problem
I've ever had with any of them is that one of the springs in one unit
snapped out of a transducer. I had to replace the tank. No other
problems, ever.
To attenuate RF interference, has anybody thought about using grounded
aluminum or copper foil inside the unit, or maybe wrapping the tank with
copper tape? I'm not an expert on this subject by any means, but I believe
I've heard about that approach for dealing with RF interference.

a call to everyone.
what I'd like to see is post, saying,
"I own a Fender RI reverb tank, I've had it for over 5 years, it
sounds great, and i have never had trouble with it it. It never broke
down, squeeled, picked up radio stations or needed serious and costly
maintenance.
I own a Fender RI reverb tank, I think it's a great and solid piece
of equipment, I am happy to own it and think it's a good investment.
I encourage anyone to not check out the alternatives, guyatone or
boutique built, either cheaper or more expensive, but to just buy the
Fender, garanteed satisfaction!"
You know, it just freaks me out, these things cost between 700 and
800 euros new here. Some I heard sound freakin'amazin', some I heard
were so so.
I paid 430 for my TRUE ptp handbuilt 6G15-'copy' which sounds fine by
me and which never gave me any trouble. the guyatone - endorsed by
what i consider the most anal band around today about the sound of
their reverb, the nebulas, costs $450 in the states (haven't seen it
in europe yet though. but importing it from the states will stil make
it only as expensive as the fender)
anyone out there having a completly bob-free reverb unit...
preferably giging, i.e. carrying the thing around?
