Meeting Link Wray...Dave W??

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 14 Nov 2005 21:57:36

Hey Dave!
I saw on Cow that you got to meet Link and asked him about recording
Rumble. Any chance you can share any other details or impressions
about meeting this legend? When was this?
Thanks!

I, like Brian, am very curious to hear about your meeting with Link Wray. He's
been an
inspiration to me for as long as I have been playing. I even owned a Premier
Model 71, the
same amp Link used to record Rumble. Damn, that's one amp I never should have
sold.

I met Link in august '05. A promoter I know who puts on the Glendale Cruise
Night hotrod show wanted Slacktone to play on the bill with Link Wray, and Dave
Mason. As I was turning him down, b&d not available, we got to talking about
Link. He said I should come to the show, and he would set up a private
meeting. I also mentioned the "Guitar Ace" tribute CD that I played on, and
sent him one. He said definetly come to the show and give one to Link.
When I was escorted in to the dressing room trailer, his wife commanded me to
sit next to Link, and talk loudly.
Link greeted me like a long lost friend - what a nice guy! We was very
excited to hear that he was on the cover of The New Gandy Dancer with Scotty
Moore, and Mike Vernon, who introduced them. They had never met before, and it
was overheard that Scotty told Link that Elvis was a Link fan.
I gave him the "Guitar Ace" comp and he just stared at the cover, and finely
asked, "Is that you wife?". Then, someone in the room said something about me
playing that night. I said, "What?". Link got a little mad that they spoiled
the surprise. Evidently, the promoter had hyped Link on me, and Link decided he
would have me come up for the encore, even before he met me!
So, during the show, I noticed a Marshall 1/2 stack and a Strat sitting up
there unused. I didn't get to play, there was no encore because the city shut
down the show...it got too late. Dang it!
Anyway, in the middle of talking about various stuff, Link started talking
about recording "Rumble". He said, "I had my Premier amp turned all the way on,
had the tremolo going, and echo [tape?]and I punched holes in the speaker". He
was very animated, and excited while he talked about this, like he did it ten
minutes ago.
Link played a sunburst Mexican Strat, into 1969/70 metal front Marshall Super
Tremolo 100. the amp had to all the way up, plus he had some kind of distortion
stompbox, as well. He opened with "Rumble" with full feedback, etc.
I was told the sound out front was not good....very bad mix. But, from the
side, where I only heard it from the stage, it was great for me.
Conclusion: Links's a cool guy, with more youthful enthusiasm than you're
likely to see in many musicians. Inspiring.....

You were fortunate to have met him. About a dozen of us tried to met
him after that show, but he wasn't interested. I was in the front row
that night, and took a video clip of him playing Rumble. It's very
distorted (more than it should be), because I was just using my "still"
camera, but if anyone is interested, it's here:
