Re: [SurfGuitar101] Line 6 Verbzilla demo (tracks recorded with digital reverb?)

Richard (errant_jedi) - 14 Nov 2005 11:16:26

I think it sounds pretty convincing too...but you know
how many factors there are affecting sound. Sometimes
you hear a recording and it's obviously a digital
reverb being used, like some of the quick cuts posted
by people here, but does anyone know of any full surf
songs recorded with a digital reverb and what brand
was used? I still recommend the Digitech to people
when it comes up.

that would be intersting. perhaps on the comp. I must say, I can't
imagin that using a digital reverb (of the kind that's way cheaper
then a tube unit)
however, I CAN testify to this: we played with PDM on last years euro
tour, and both Jono and Ferenc played through a digiverb - admittedly,
through PA as well. they had very very good sound, very convincing as
natural reverb
and two weeks ago we played with El Ray, both guitarists had a holy
grail. again, great sound, very convincing. you might want to check
with them, they seemed so excited about my reverb tank that i got the
impression they do everything with the holy grail, recording as well.
but perhaps they were just being polite.
BUT - neither band had the DRIP reverb, in fact it sounded more like a
good plate reverb (that you'd never bring along live ;-). and, both
bands play with lots of other effects too, so to what degree their
great sound was a great classic surf sound is very much open to
debate.

Just want to mention that given our druthers, Jono and
I would have prefered to have our tanks, but after
reading about the Nebulas "fun" with tanks on the
road, we decided to go the the printed circuit route.
The Digiverb is a nifty little box, but it's no tank,
and it has no drip...
In contrast, Wannes' band (The Monotones) had THE surf
sound! What were/are you guys and gal using for a
backline?

sorry ferenc, is hould have mentioned the digiverb was not really your
firstchoice, I knew that. still, PDM didn't suffer half as much from
not having a tank with you as the nebulas would have, given the
different styles. yet, i'd still love to hear pdm WITH some proper
tanks.
as for our sound, thanks for the compliment. when we played with el
ray, they said to be impressed with our sound, saying it was very
satan's pilgrims like. and this was without us making the offer of oral
pleasure! (note to unlunf: I actually had a selfmade emoticon here, but
for decency's sake, i deleted it. just so you know. LMAO)
anyway, that compliment was way over the top, but we had good sound.
and i can see how it is pilgrimish, depending heavily on a slightly
breaking up alu-cap JBL and heavy reverb.
I'm now playing a bassman and a cosmoverb tank, Laura is using a crate
powerblock and a digiverb. both strat-copies (squier and tokai) with
pup upgrade, and a jbl d140F at the end. Bassman uses a Ibanez ric copy
with a coffetable-sized fender pup in it, that looks like hell but
sounds great and plays like a dream, through a bassman 100 and a single
15" eminence in a custom cab. what we used last year when we played
with PDM was similar, Laura probably used a fender 75 instead of the
poweblock (with the onboard reverb). but i cant remeber exactly.
