Strings-Fender Pure Nickel Wound

Casey Cash (surfgitar) - 13 Nov 2005 21:47:45

Just wondering, am I the only person in this group using Fender Pure
Nickel Wound Strings (currently Original Bullets 0.11-0.49)? Seem to
have a good vintage sound for surf/instro to me. They do require
changing more ofter than I'd like though. All of the steel string I
tried sounded too bright and "hard". Casey

The guitar player in my punk band, The Liabilities,
uses Fender strings only, whichever kind he can lay
his hands on, and I've never known why. He has to
change them constantly and to me they just don't feel
very good. I don't know that I could comment on the
sound since he's always playing with a lot of
distortion, but the guitar tone on the song we
submitted to the comp turned out sounding good with
them.

Ahh well...lemme add my $0.02 (USD) regarding the
Fender strings. After being a D'Addario man for a long
time, I recently put on a .011 set of Fender
Nickelplated Steel *Standard Tension* Bullets on my
'94 AmStd Strat.
Being a little too eager to get rockin' I noticed my
bridge baseplate way high *after* tuning my axe to
pitch. After adjusting the claw to get the right
amount of "float" with the new 11's (was using
9's...the typical rock guitar hero gauge) everything's
fine. I love how these strings feel under my fingers
despite the heavier gauge. Tonewise, it has great
twang with all the lows and highs I need. It actually
sounds "vintage-y". Moreover, it's been very stable
tuning-wise, probably due to the German-made bullet
end that fits into the trem block.
These strings are "Hecho en Mexico", but they're
fine...I like 'em.

I used to use Fenders for that mid-bump they have, and now I use the Rotosound
Purples for that effect. Mucho better! Try them at least
once......www.juststrings.com

OK - I'll give the purple Rotosounds a try then. Hope they have a set
of 11's with a plain 3rd string...
Thanks, Casey

The .11s are Rotosound Reds. Greys are .13s and so on.

The Purples are 12s with a wound "G". 10s are yellow with plain "G". I don't
know about the 11s, but they probably have a plain "G". Rotosounds come with an
extra "E". They also seem to bet better wraped at the ball end. I have not had
the problem of them unwinding when i use the Gotoh locking keys with a Jag/Jazz
tailpiece.
