Re: Fender '64 Vibroverb Custom

Robb Lowe (robbhatesit) - 16 Jan 2003 21:22:40

Interesting note on SRV's Vibroverbs....
He used two of them - and they were sequential serial numbers - bought at
different times, and different places.
Diaz is famous for being one of the guys that helped shape the SRV sound -
arguably the best guitar tone of modern times. One night in DC, Cesar walked
up to then-unknown Stevie Vaughan and said, "You play great, but you sound
like shit!"
Stevie, being true his nature, asked what Cesar could do, versus giving him
a Texan wallop for insulting his sound. Diaz schooled him on a lot of stuff
and worked his amps from then on.
That SRV sound is a lot like DD's sound - it's 90% his hands and 10% his
hardware. It's the meat and bone, how you hold a string etc.
Fender will sell a few of these monsters and I bet they do sound good, but
the Dual Professional is the one I'm still lusting over. They can be had
regularly for around $1100-1200 US if you watch ebay enough. There's one on
there right now for a buy now of $1500, and bid at $750 currently with a few
days to go.
I'm with Mel - someone at Fender convince their 'boutique' shop to crank out
a brownface Showman - me, I'd prefer the DUAL version, but anything will be
fine :)
