I don't get it, Gavin, the Callaham is about the same price.

When I was building my custom Surf guitar, there was no debate on whether to
use a
Callaham - simply too expensive. However, anyone looking for a very weighty
trem block for
a Strat can purchase the standard 6-hole vintage-style chrome trem from
BestGuitarParts.com, for about $45. It comes with a big billet of milled steel
that is much
thicker than that found on today's American standard Strats.

Marty,
$45 (BestGuitarParts) is about the same as $225 (Callaham)?
I hope you don't help your kids with their math homework! <g>

I have installed several Callaham forged steel trem inertial blocks in my
guitars. The full retail price is $55.00 NOT a penny more!!
The DiTemple "Titanium" block, regularly advertised in GP and VG IS $225.00 and
I would never consider spending that kind of money with the Callaham being
available.
Marty is much closer to being correct on his numbers here, and he is owed an
apology!

Marty,
You're correct as usual. <sigh> <g>
I was 'thinking' of the DeTemple titanium block.
That's the one that I wanted a report on.
Callaham doesn't make a block for my Strat,
I shoulda looked at their site first.

seems to me Gavin wasn't talking about the tremblock, but about the
entire trem-unit. (see quote at the bottom) - which is 100-ish
according to the Callaham website.
I noted that some in this thread seem to go for more weight, while
others advocate less weight. what's the deal?

I bought the entire bridge for $45 plus shipping, which is less than the cost of
a Callaham
trem block at about $55 plus shipping. A Callaham Strat bridge is about $110.

BestGuitarParts.com looks like a nice resource. I hadn't heard of them until
Gavin brought them up. They do have the vintage style 6-hole chrome trem for
strats at $42- but it doesn't appear to have the trem block (in the picture and
description). There's another by Hipshot that is pictured a trem block but its
$95.00.
As for more weight vs less weight ...less weight is preferred by many for the
body of the guitar (the wood). More weight is preferred by some for the trem
block itself. Personally, I don't particularly care how heavy the trem block is
so a light weight one, like that titanium one that was mentioned, is appealing.
The $225- price was for the titanium block was not appealing.

Ah, so it did include the trem block. Do they indicate from what material the
block was made? Callaham makes a point to say that he is using "cold rolled
steal" from which they were originally made as opposed to the zinc alloy used
now-a-days. Also, does the trem block have the shallow holes?

Hi Marty,
My bridge had everything included - don't know why they don't picture it without
the
block! Anyway, it is a very good bridge. I found it comparable to my Strat's
bridge,
although the block, as mentioned, was much more brute and was from a milled
billet of
steel, not cast as was the case with my Fender. Cost of the unit was a factor,
and I feel I
got superior value for the money.
I have always been curious about guitar body weight - on the one hand, the
Gibson Les
Paul is renowned both for its long sustain and for its crippling weight. Yet, as
with many
things, Fender owners seem to covet light-weight bodies.
When I built my Custom Jazzmaster, I specifically asked for a heavy, dense piece
of wood
be used for the body, as I reasoned it would have a more resonant sustain, like
a Les Paul.
As it turns out, the guitar does have very nice, long sustain and I like the
heft that comes
with a solidbody that is back-routed, rather than channel-routed, like most
classic
Fenders.
I don't know if my theory makes any sense, but I get damn fine tone from my
custom
Jazzmaster!

That is probably a Gotoh bridge with a zinc alloy
block. Fender uses them on the Highway One Strats, and
another thing I don't like about them is the way the
saddles are shaped. they do not adjust as well as the
USA. If yoy try to get them very low, they will not go
down. I've also seen a lot where the intonation
threads
are bad.

Thanks for the additional info, DW. Well ok, my '56 reissue Strat is going to
have to suffer it's modern, grey enameled, deep hole, zinc alloy trem block a
little longer until I break out another 55 clams for the more period correct
Callaham.

Johnson Signature Model)
That is probably a Gotoh bridge with a zinc alloy
block. Fender uses them on the Highway One Strats, and
another thing I don't like about them is the way the
saddles are shaped. they do not adjust as well as the
USA. If yoy try to get them very low, they will not go
down. I've also seen a lot where the intonation
threads
are bad.
