Has anybody out there played Fender's Eric Johnson signature model? I
gotta tell you, I am absolutely blown away! It's relatively expensive
@ about $1600.00, but in my opinion is well worth it. The tone of
this guitar is phenominal. Acoustically, it is the loudest solid body
electric guitar, I've ever heard. Plugged in......holy guacamole!!!!
You hit a note or a chord on this thing and it just resonates, swells
and sustains like you wouldn't believe. This strat sings like no
other that I've ever played. The carefully chosen wood, thin nitro-
cellulose lacquer finish, one piece quartersawn neck, the thin
further-back headstock, staggered tuners, elimination of string
trees, shallow pickup cavities, higher-mass tremolo block, and
specially made pickups really make a H-U-G-E difference in tone. The
guitar weighs in at only about 61/2 lbs!!!! The neck pickup is like
a '54, the middle pickup is reverse wound and like an early 60's
pickup, and the neck pickup like an overwound 50's pickup. These
pickups are well balanced, complex, as quiet as you could reasonably
expect from single coils, and are, in my opinion, everything they
should be. The 5-spring tremolo is pretty stiff, but with the
modified headstock and lack of string-trees, REALLY stays in tune. In
fact I caught Eric @ The Independent Club in S.F. on Sunday night,
and he played the sh*t out of this guitar all night, only taking it
off to tune up during the bass and drum solos. He played one (!!!)
Red signature model for the entire 2 hour show. How many endorsees
don't even use their own signature model or products they endorse???
Eric obviously believes in this model. Kudos to Eric, Michael Frank-
Braun, and everyone else involved in designing and building these
wonderful instruments.(Dave Wronski, were you involved in building
any of these babies???) I'm sure there are the guys out there saying
that it isn't worth 8 times the cost of a Squier strat, 5 times the
cost of a standard, or twice the cost of an American strat, but I beg
to differ. It really hurt to fork over $1600.00+, but I bought a
sunburst one, and it's the best money I ever spent! Now if my fingers
would just stop bleeding.....

Congrats on the new guitar, Bob. A Strat in '54 was somewheres around 265- which
is between 1500 and 1600 in today's money. For that reason, I think the EJ strat
is not overpriced and those details are nice, especially the light weight. I
have a '54 Masterbuilt from last year that is also very light weight and next to
the fat neck, it is my favorite feature.
I don't know what you mean when describe the pick-ups as complex. How does one
tell the difference between a complex pick-up and a non-complex pick-up?

Thanks, Marty! As far as complexity of the pick-ups goes, I guess
what I was trying to say is that I'm hearing overtones that I don't
normally hear from other guitars. In thinking about it now, I realize
it probably has more to do with the wood than the pickups. The high
mass tremolo block, quartersawn neck and other features also
undoubtedly contribute as well. Regardless, these pickups are awesome.
It's got a pretty beefy neck, as well, which I like a lot. It starts
out as a soft "V" and transitions into a "C" shape farther down the
neck. It took some getting used to, but I can see why Eric chose this
neck. After a short adjustment, I love it. I'd be interested to hear
from people who've played masterbuilt custom shop strats and this
one, and how they compare. I've heard of a few a few cosmetic flaws
on these E.J. strats (mine is perfect), but tonally they've gotten
great reviews. I couldn't be happier!

Differences between the MB '54 and the E.J. are:
1. Flat radius neck on the E.J. verses original 7-8" radius for the '54. The
flatter radius allows for easier string bends and easier action (as Gibson fans
have always known).
2. E.J. pick-ups are much more consistent and higher output than the hand-wound
MB '54 pickups. I've seen on the Fender forum the MB '54 pick-ups varying in
output from 4 ohms to 5.8 ohms.
3. Finish flaws are intentional on the MB '54. Each master builder did things a
little different.
4. MB '54 has light ash body. E.J. has light Alder body. Both have the quarter
sawn necks.
5. You've already pointed out cosmetic differences at the headstock. In addition
to the original profile at the headstock, the MB '54 has the round string tree.
6. MB '54 has "mini-skirt"knobs and rounded edges on the pick-up covers and are
made of a facsimile of the original brittle plastic.
7. One major error on the MB '54 was that, with all the attention to detail,
they put in a modern trem block intended for Fender Bullet strings. E.J. was
smart in insisting on the period correct trem block. I have since replaced mine
with the Callaham trem block.

So, Marty.....
Inquiring minds want to know if the Callaham tone
block is worth the big skekels they're asking for
it. Does it truly increase the sustain, flatten
the frequency response (remove a peak at the 1.8KHz
point), and/or otherwise improve the overall tone?
That's an awful lot of gilders for just a piece of
cast metal with some holes in it. <g>

Marty,
I read your Harmony Central review of your '54 MB. Man, that's
a pisser about the trem block. I can't believe Fender missed that
detail. Eric definitely got it right with his signature model.
Regardless, it sounds like you're very happy with your 54 MB.

As anal as EJ seems to be about his sound and equipment, I'm not surprised
he made sure Fender got it right with his signature model.
If only all artists with a signature model would be the same way.

Yeah, the MB '54 is a joy to play and it's become my main electric guitar. I
don't think Fender "missed" the detail on the tremblock. It was an intentional
compromise to accomodate Fender Bullet strings.
