Hi All, I'd like any opinions on what are to be considered the most
surf- friendly cities (U.S. - sorry) outside of SoCal, Norcal and
NYC?.It would be nice if the answers are based on current situations
not historical. Factors to consider: number of bands, number of venues
open to surf shows, size of crowds at the shows. Judging Satan's
Pilgrims experience last spring, Portland should be up at the top. Any
others?

I don't have ANY experince playing in Portland, all I know of Portland
is that the Bulls whopped the Trailblazers back in the 90s for our 2nd
title. :) I think the special part to the Portland shows with SPs
earlier this year had to do with the band more than the place. People
were flying across the country to see these guys. They could put on a
show in Morris Illinois and probably draw.
Chicago has barely any surf scene... big Rockabilly scene and vintage
car clubs who like surf music. But that's about it.

Portland does indeed have a strong surf music presence, and a kick-
ass rock n roll scene -- multiple clubs all around the city
I assume you read about the Oct 29th MONSTER SURF BASH at Duff's
Garage, where I was the guest MC? 5 bands! Mars Needs Women,
Ignitrons, Apehangers, Verbtones, Volcanos -- and the turnout was
quite strong!
NYC, generally speaking, ain't that big on surf music either -- but
I have been making inroads, chipping away, trying to enlighten the
masses to wondrous sounds of the almighty reverb
Unsteady Freddie
Seattle finds us adorable. We normally play to younger crowds who tend
to like us. The Seattle scene isn't the greatest. None of the bands
tend to play together.

Atlanta, GA has possibilities for being a surf friendly city. The
Intoxicators! have played there a few times and the crowds are
pretty good. We mostly play Tiki Torch Nights at Trader Vic's...
We played a show there last year with John McCorvey's band The
Surge, and headlined one this year..
Someone last year saw us there and signed us up for a really cool
festival gig called Drive Invasion.
It's held at the Starlight Six Drive In every labor day weekend.
When we played there in 2004 Davie Allan And The Arrows, Deke
Dickerson and The Ecco-Fonics, Nashville Pussy, The Bo-Keys, and The
Cogburns were on the bill... (plus about 10 other awesome bands...
mostly rockabilly & garage rock stuff)
My friend Vid from Starlight Six Atlanta, has moved is working on
doing a similar thing out in LA... at the Mission Tiki drive in...
So look for surf in both places...
The other place that we played in Atlanta was the Echo Lounge... but
it's closed now.
Tallahassee, FL... Our home base... is a strange scene... There are
currently 2 surf bands... The Intoxicators!, and The Reclaimers...
Most of the clubs here expect local bands to play for free... (one
club pays about $50 if you are lucky... $150 if you are a friend of
the owner) they throw in 3 PBR's per band member... What a sweet
deal... Ha!
When we play at these places we usually have anywhere from 3-30
people that show up specifically to see us...
An example of this would be our gig coming up tomorrow...
We are the first band on a 3 band bill... the headliner is a Sublime
Tribute band... Tickets are $12... of course we are expected to play
for free... brutal eh...
On the other hand... If I book my own show, and rent out a hall for
our gig... we have around 60-100 people that show up... so that's
what we try to do most of the time...
The FSU campus also is a good place to try to play... They have a
club there called The Club Downunder (run by student campus
entertainment)... we played there with Los StraitJackets last
year... It was a good place to play... It might be possible to see
if they would be willing to do a surf show... I'll see if I can work
on this for next year...
Brian Crum
The intoxicators!
Austin, Texas. Maybe Ted James or Mike Vernon could fill us in on the
details????

For anyone wanting to play the East Coast:
Try playing Hampton Nh, Portsmouth Nh or Maine in the summer. I used
to live there. I saw Satan's Pilgrims play at the Elvis Room (sadly is
no longer)ten years ago in Portsmouth. They drew a decent crowd and
put on a great show. I would have loved to have seen more surf bands
play that area when I lived there. I am sure I was not the only one.
Hampton Beach has great potential in the summer for surf music. There
are lots of special events that draw bigger crowds. The same is true
of Portsmouth and Maine. I visit family there every summer so I will
be watching for surf shows the summer of 2006.
Check out this surf music friendly company.
The owner, Dave Cropper is a musician with a band. He could be very
helpful with putting together and promoting shows.

Thanks! We loved Portsmouth-we must've played there 2 or 3 times. It
was better than a lot of bigger cities on the East coast. Portland Me
was good too in November, even. Except John spent a few hours in the
pokey there...
