Technical Talk

Jeff Riedle (stretchriedle) - 01 Nov 2005 17:23:07

So, during the glissando on "Pipeline", how many
triple-flamadiddle-quadruplets with a half-step-paradiddle-reverse-shuffle
do most drummers play?
And during the "Hava Nagila" part of "Misirlou", are you side-stepping your
triplets with the accent on 4, or are you cut timing your double triplets
with the accent on 7??

Pass. Don't play Miserlou or Hava Nagila.
-Wait this is boring. How about some real surf drummer questions, like:
How about how many ride cymbals do you go through in a year?
How many gallons of sweat passes through your undies on the way to
your socks on a given night?
There's a drum riser available-do you use it?
Why do we play a form of music that destroys sticks (rimshots)?
Can you ever get sick of the surf beat? (NOOOOOO!)
Why do guitar players have a problem with playing 2 songs in a row
that are in the same key, but have no problem with doing 6 fast ones
in a row while your hands are bleeding?
Ok, this is boring too.
I got one. Mel Taylor kicked ass on Tony Meehan and Brian Bennet!!!!!!
:)
Love always,
T. Pilgrim

There are really good versions of Pipeline with the drummer aping the
glissando... the Challengers for instance.

JUST IN CASE there was any doubt as to my initial intention, when I posted
the email below I was being a sarcastic smart-ass, trying to add a little
fun and humor to the group. You know, another attempt at drummer
comedy...!!!!!!! Since this is called SurfGuitar101, and I read it daily, I
was trying to inject some discussion from and for the other drummers who
read it.
Having said that, I appreciated both comments, the one from John and the
follow-up from Phil.
Keep them coming!!

Once again, another attempt at drummer comedy (or
attempt by a drummer to do anything, for that matter)
falls on it's face. I kid, of course. Seriously
though, how can you tell when there's a drummer at
your door? The knocking keeps getting louder and
louder and faster and faster...no, seriously though...
Richard :)

depends where the band's particular version falls on the intensity scale -
Chantays version at one extreme; Agent Orange version on the other. Also
depends on how well the guitar player plays the glissando - if he/she plays
it really well, than it should be heard. Or you can be really cool (like
the Space Cossacks) and just cover Space Probe instead!
