Gents, I couldn't agree more that this whole "vintage" thing is
getting out of control.
The Lava Rats and I are down here in LA on tour at the moment, which
means we spend every afternoon farting around different local music
stores. Tuesday I had the chance to swing by West LA music, where I
took down and played a '63 Jazzmaster in a white/silver sparkle
finish. While it still played super clean, the neck was a little
rough, and the trem. system was all shot to shit. I mean, the spring
must have been dislodged or something, because as soon as you
whammied down, it wouldn't come back up. I had to bring the bar back
up by hand, causing the tuning to go horribly out. Not only that,
but I'd say, dimes to dollars, that the finish was not original,
because in a chipped part along the upper bout, I caught a peek of
what appeared to be an ice blue or daphne blue finish.
What did they want for this "slightly used" vintage axe???
$4600!!!
Yes, reissues never sound as clean as the original, but when I can
buy about six guitars for the price of a vintage one... the choice is
no choice at all.
