The Surfaris In Berlin

hbseacliff - 28 Oct 2005 10:41:23

I told my friend from Berlin Germany about the Surfaris tour. Here is
review of the show:
The Great Surfaris Night!!!!
We saw the SURFARIS and they were just great!!! Thank you for letting
us know about their tour.
The Wild at Heart is a kind of a pub or club with a little stage.
There is place for about 100-150 people standing shoulder by
shoulder. It is small but comfortable (and very smoky...)
It took us 50 minutes by bus and underground. I was wearing a rocker
T-Shirt and Gini a Shirt with the American flag and the eagle on it.
It was fantastic. To see and listen live to the SURFARIS has been a
great experience. They exceeded our expectations! You will not
believe but we had the chance to talk to Paul and Jack. We told them
about you, our friend from Huntington Beach. Jack lives on Balboa
Island, where we have been together.
Gini really enjoyed the music too, even though she had to get up a
5.15 am in the morning (we came home at 2 am...).
Too bad that you could not come with us.
Thanks again for telling us about the SURFARIS!!
Take care,
Thorsten

Is there even one original member of the Surfaris left in the band?

We're confusing bands here. There are two Surfaris!!!! The one with Paul
Johnson (which DID feature original member Jim Pash until his untimely
passing a few months back) and original guitarist Jim Fuller.
Then, there's the Surfaris with original guitarist, Bob Berryhill. It's
Bob's Surfaris that are in Europe on tour now.

Don't forget the 1980's version of the Surfaris (#3??) in northern
California that was Ron Wilson's band.

Are you sure? Not to dispute an expert, but the Surfaris European tour
dates are on the Johnson/Fuller and now Eglit lineup's website

My MISTAKE!!!!! Sheesh......
I've had several conversations with Bob Berryhill in recent months and I
know that both he and his wife have spent considerable time in Europe for
business purposes. Some of the discussions have been about his interest in
taking his version of The Surfaris over there. When I read the
announcement that The Surfaris were headed for Europe recently, I
ASS-umed.........
Even after reading something about Paul Johnson being on tour in Europe at
the moment, I thought he was talking about The Duo-Tones!!!!!!
There was a post here earlier today about the Surfaris playing at the Wild
at Heart in Berlin. LOL.....I've played at the Wild at Heart before. It
amazes me to think that the entire (what, 5-piece?) Paul Johnson/Jim Fuller
band fit on that small stage WITH amps and a drum kit.

Jim,
you are right. Here in Europe is the band with Paul Johnson.
I know it,because I would like to met him, when he was staying in
Dortmund last Monday.
It was a great pitty for me for being not there, because I hadn't the
time,I thought before. :-(

Bob Berryhill's Surfaris may not be playing Europe, but you can hear
them on their great "Wipe Out" CD. My favorite release from last year.
Buy it at their website:

Hi everybody !
We (Los Twang Marvels) had the honour to share the
stage with the Surfaris in Berlin (Wild at Heart) and
Jena (Cafe Wagner).
We had a great time toghether, both bands rocking hard
and loud, as it should be.
Regarding the line-up; according to the guys the only
original Surfari is Jim Fuller, who rocked out on the
cover versions of Summertime Blues and Somethin´else,
Mr. Cochran would have had a great ball, if he would
have seen it !
Paul Johnson, yes, Mr.Moto/Squad Car himself! was
another great contribution to this foundation of
rock´n´roll, I was totally out of control seeing this
guys playing so well!
I don´t wanna take it longer, but the other chums
where absolutely great too, Ron Eglit putting his
Jazzmaster
on fire, my God !
It was just totally amazing, and I wish we could have
gone all the way on tour with them...
Feel free to contact me if there are more questions or
whatever.
Best wishes to all,
Alex Anthony

Alex,
I about spewed all over my monitor when I saw your note!
I can't even image how Dick Dale must be feeling now
that his right hand man of nearly a quarter century has
departed. I do have to wonder, what could they've
possibly offered to induce him to leave DD?
I saw him (with DD) on a whistle stop tour back in, what,
'98 or '99.... I dunno, but he had a t-shirt that touted
"Agent Orange". I had to speak with him just for that
alone, after the show. He ignored everyone else for a
few moments as we chatted about AO, and what they were
up to next. He said that I was only the second person
to comment about them, and to know who they were, on this
tour, and he'd been wearing the shirt almost every gig.
(I assume after suitable washing, of course. <g>)
Nice guy. An obvious sparkplug, but also able to keep
it in check when he's with someone else who's got the
'star' billing. It'll be very interesting to see what
direction the Surfaris take, with him on board. <g>

There was a BIG gap between Ron leaving Dick Dale and playing with the
Surfaris. You need look no farther than Dale for incentives.
Ron Eglit is an old-timer in surf.

Phil,
Yeah, upon re-reading it, my own message did the math
correctly, but somehow I just didn't get it.... I must
have still been in shock! <lol> You're correct, it was
2003 when he left DD, for whatever reason.
Now, the $64 dollar question is, what else did he do
prior to joining DD in 1979? I don't recall seeing
him on the radar before then, and a quick trip through
my catalog doesn't turn up his name in any of the older
stuff I've got (which isn't everything, but it's a lot
<g>). Can you shed some light on anything he did between
'63 and '79 that might have garnered national attention?

Ron Eglit was lead guitarist for two recording surfbands bands in the
sixties, Adrian and the Sunsets and the illusive and wonderful
Hollywood Sunsets Band.
Adrian and the Sunsets
Ron Eglit
Clde Brown
Dick Lambert
Bobby Forest
Bruce Riddar
Adrian Lloyd
Hollywood Sunsets
Bruce Ridder
Bobby Forest
Ron Eglit
Johnny Hunt
He also played with the legendary West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band,
Dead Men Don't Surf, Matt Kelley, New World Relampagos, Fire And Love,
Heaven Calling, Sunday Best, Kingfish, Ballistico (Ron's son's band),
and others. Ron has also produced bands and sessions.

Orange County types might fondly remember Ron's '70-'80's band the
Gyromatics, who were a fabulous quirky outfit, weeks ahead of their
time. He was actually part of the tail end of the first wave with a
band called Adrian and the Sunsets (who looked more like greasers
than surfers). After years of seeing him only on bass, we tend to
forget what a wonderful guitar player he is (and not just on surf
stuff). Being an occasional member of Ron's occasional band, Dead Men
Don't Surf, he's a hoot to play with---you never know where he's
going, and he never plays it the same way twice. Plus, he's got
enough road stories to make any gig fun.
