Dick Dale Strat...

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 28 Oct 2005 09:35:44

I'm curious...does anybody on this list play or know of somebody who plays a
Fender artist-
series Dick Dale Strat? It seems like, if there were a target market for this
guitar, it would be,
well, us. And yet, I have never seen any surf guitarist (besides DD himself)
playing one of
these guitars!

I had one years ago that I bought from Musicians Friend. I ended up
sending it back.
Big fat neck and weak pickups.
The finish was nice, though...

Phil that's really weird! Cause when I played Dick's guitar last
year, I was struck by how thin the neck was. Not at all fat. Why
would Fender not copy the neck of the original for the signature
model? I don't get it.
I think the biggest problem with the DD Strat is that it's really damn
expensive. And ultimately, how many of us want to be Dick-clones? I
think most of us here love him a lot, but there's much more to surf
music than Dick Dale - no matter what HE thinks!

maybe its because its a strat... and dick dale doesn't play surf music - he
plays "dick dale music" Personally, I'm waiting for the Fender artist series
Dave and Scott Pilgrim model Jaguars in red and blue, respectively, sold
separately or as a set! Sweat not included.

Ivan,
This was in 98 or 99 when I got it. Maybe they've gotten more accurate
since then? I don't know. I've pretty much given up on signature
guitars since then. The funniest thing was it came with 9's.
I ended up with an American Strat that had a really thin neck and it
played great, which I sold to get my 6120W which has an even thinner
neck.
Next stop, Mosrite.

No, but I have a considered ordering a gold metalflake replacement body off
eBay for one of my MIJ '62 Reissue Strats. I love the look, but think the
reverse headstock on the DD signature model is just a bit silly. Never played
one though.

I think the idea behind the "Dick Dale Stratocaster" is to
honor Dick Dale and the role he played Fender R & D
(Showman Amp, reverb unit, Stratocater, JBL speakers,
loudness etc.) and the surf guitar boom of the early 60s.
I don't think that model makes much money for Fender,
perhaps that's why it costs two arms and a leg.

It also comes with some kind of "Custom Shop" 54 RI
pickups, which never made a whole lot of sense to me.
I've heard nothing but lukewarm reviews of these
pickups and figured they were just another feature to
justify jacking up the price on the DD sig.

I think Brett from the SumpPump Monkeys plays one.
