What Ivan said. Don't get me wrong, I love the Ventures. But I think
that their ratio of good to crap is leaning heavy on the crap. The
Shads did take a turn toward MOR by the late 60s, most of which I
didn't care for, but Hank's tone and playing was always superb. The
early Shadows stuff is perfection.
Shawn Martin
Life is short. Play for the music. Wear your heart on your sleeve.
So I wouldn't get a big head, I was given the gift of a handicap to
keep me in constant touch with my limitations

The Ventures are not better than the Shadows and the Shadows are not better than
the Ventures. They are two very different instro bands. One may prefer one's
approach to instro over the other's approach.
To recommend each group...
Shadows: Great guitar tone, great selection of tunes, great production, some
great originals.
Ventures: Some great originals, some great covers, nice tone in the Fender
years, cool gritty tone in the Mosrite years.
To criticize each group:
Shadows: Too polite for rock and roll, waxed MOR, The Rise and Fall of Flingal
Bunt = One Mint Julep, Shadoogie = Guitar Boogie Shuffle
Ventures: Generous use of sesson players, used marquee value cover-song titles
to sell albums, often appear out of touch with what made them cool in the '60's.

Hey Dan, ah, I just got emotional and pissed off and turned into a
dick. I think in some ways they were a whole lot better, in some ways
a whole lot worse. See my other post for details.

Should I assume that these are illegal? I have heard Phil talk about the
Shadows, but really
never had any of their stuff. I am against illegal downloading of stuff. I
always felt that if I
were to seal someones music, they would not get the money they deserved. Since
they
were not making money they might just stop making the music i like. I have
bought over
50 Instro surf rock CDs in the past year. In some cases I have bought it
online(Apple Music
store) and then bought the CD.
Thanks
Guy

Guy,
Tough question to answer, glad you asked it! I feel pretty
much like you do, but fortunately for me, I've already got
everything they've ever put out on CD, so I don't need it.
My "sort-of" advice? Go ahead and get them, if you still can.
Think of it as nothing more than a sampler ('cause that's all
it really is), and if you like what you hear, go support them
in the traditional manner - buy their stuff for real. <g>
Which I think you will, they're that good. <lol>
