Listening to Radio/ was: Fame and Fortune - OT

mattcrunk - 26 Oct 2005 11:13:57

Ferenc's post really makes me wish I'd listened to more radio growing up.
But the fact is, coming of age in the late 70's, in Alabama, there was no good
radio around - or if it was out there I never found it. Wolfman Jack or Kasey
Kasem were about all I ever knew of as far as DJs.
My one exception to this happened in the late 80s, with my discovery of
Prairie Home Companion on NPR. I was in my early 20s and newly divorced from a
bad and all-too-early marriage, and had just bought my first sailboat. Every
Saturday for that entire summer I made sure I was on the lake with a packed
market sandwich and a bottle of wine, just in time for A Prairie Home Companion.
Heading out just in time for the show, I'd eat my dinner, drink some wine,
usually alone except for Keillor and company, while I sailed past sunset. One
of the best summers of my life.
