PHIL DIRT tribute - amazing!

Unsteady Freddie (schizofredric) - 24 Oct 2005 12:40:14

just wanted to weigh on wigth regard to the TRIBUTE concert event at the
BROOKDALE LODGE on October 22 in honor of KFJC's PHIL DIRT
oh, man....this was maybe the ultimate surf music extravaganza -- especially for
a dude who shlepped all the way from NEW YORK (yeah, me) -- I met so many people
I have been corresponding with in the Yahoo Groups, and got to hear and
experience a lot of live surf music from the Northern Calif. scene -- so glad I
made this journey
quickly, in order if my notes are accurate, we were treated to
MARTY TIPPENS and JOHN BLAIR on acoustic guitar -some serious strumming and some
amazing note bending by these 2 - really enjoyed watching the interplay of these
2 amazing virtuosos -- hey I knew John from the Nightriders stuff and
beyond...but Marty...bless U - U were awesome...knocked me back by your stylish
playing....most impressive
DAVE WRONSKY then noodled (well for him, it was noodling!) - he just ripped
some serious surf riffs, deep reverb...man I just sat there in awe.....how does
he make it seem so, well, "easy" to play? b/c it ain't....DAVE you smoked!
GLASGOW TIKI SHAKERS were just great....played their hearts out in the short
time alloted to them (I think each artist got 15 minutes or so?) -- Mr. McGlynn
(and band-mates) - totally sweet people too; gave me some of their latest CDs,
and played 2 of the trax on the LIVE 'TWANG SHEBANG' I did Sunday at 4 pm (Pac.
time) from KECG in Oakldn (yeah me, on FM! can U dig that?)
then my buddies THE AQUAMARINES - with matching "sailor" (?) hats - what a great
example of what surf music should sound like....RUSS 'ACE' - lead guitarist, has
become a dear friend; what great spirit in this guy! and good to finally see
BIG WAVE DAVE playing live! great set!
NEPTUNES - and their double-neck guitars were STELLAR! blew me away actually!
guys send me more music for TWANG SHEBANG - what amazing musicianship!
the BESERKERS played strong, and I loved seeing them live; my first
introduction to this band actually (I am still doing a lot of catching
up)....glorious surf music!!
then FERENC (of POLLO DEL MAR fame) - who brought this amazing event together,
got on stage with MEL WALDORF (did I spell that right? like the hotel?) and
others and treated us to the music of MACH IV, MEL-TONES, POLLO, MISHIGA BEACH
PARTY -- what a cool set that was! gentlemen, I bow before you, just awesome!
WOODIES then ripped it up, shredding with vigor....by this time, I just couldnt
believe the music I had already experienced.....they were knock-down amazing
as were THE INSECT SURFERS - David Aronson I could swear was jumping off a
trampoline but couldn't find one in my eyesight...man this guy has a serious
adrenilin supply! I thought I was hyper? Jesus...dude...switch to de-caf!
Kidding...the music was phenomenal! Thanks for the CDs too.
and SHOCKWAVE(S) - big dudes with a big sound - knocking paintings off the wall!
unreal!
and the MERMEN - Big Wave Dave already covered them nicely....hey some people
argue that ain't 'surf music' - whatever...for me, it's surf, for sure (as are
the AQUA VELVETS) -- what a treat to see the MERMEN again (saw them in Jan. at
COOPER's in NEVADA CITY) -- psychedelic tripped-out surf...I had an acid
flashback (and I never did any acid!!)...seriously, what a honor to witness this
--
and on a final note, deep gratitude and big hugs go out to PHIL DIRT, for
everything he has done - giving without expectation - quite spiritual if you ask
me - and for the support he has shown me and TWANG SHEBANG and ELEMENTAL
INSTRUMENTAL
LOVE YOU PHIL - YOU DESERVED THIS TRIBUTE -- LET'S DO IT ONCE A YEAR!!
twang it and they will come!
