Rickenbaker Question

pwrose1 - 23 Oct 2005 17:45:00

Howdy!
A local collector has TWO Rickenbacker 360's
for sale. He wants $2000 firm for the pair, and he's
throwing in a little VOX pathfinder practice amp.
One guitar is a 360/6 string and the other is a
360/12 string. Both are in pristine condition. Not
a nick or scratch on either one. No whammy bar retros,
but the PU's were changed to toaster type, Complete
with cases and manuals. Both are in the 'fireglo' finish.
I was interested in the 12 string only, but I'd be hard
pressed to break up the set after seeing them puppies.
The neck action on the six feels a lot like a Mosrite,
skinny. Tone on his little amp was not impressive, no
reverb, so I couldn't wail in testing. The pots were
all quiet...no scratchies in the sound adjusting them.
Like brand new.
What do you guys think?
I asked my boss if I could sell him my vacation time
and he said OK. ;>D

Owning a pair of 360s would be awesome. $2000 does seem like a good
price. They go for about $1000 each on ebay. If you have the cash.

I've got a 330, I put a Bigsby on it. Very strange playing
guitars. They make the Jaguar seem "normal".

Bill,
I have had a number of Ric's over the years, both the 360/6 and 12
string. I currently have a 330/12 and a 660/12. I got rid of both
360's. I prefer the 330 model to the 360--one of the issues with the
360/12 is the width of the neck. I have small fingers, and yet
precision fretting was always an issue for me. Roger McGuinn said he
used to practice like 8 hours a day when he first got his Ric to
master the precise finger placement requirements. The 330, because it
has no neck binding, is a little easier to finger properly, in my
view. I also think it is a little more resonant than the 360. The
360/6 is a nice rhythm guitar, but it isn't all that versatile for
lead work IMHO. Also, I have never found any strings that sound good
on a Ric other than Pyramid flats, which ain't cheap.
I'm actually trying to sell my mint 330/12, now, on Craigslist.
Contact me off list if you are interested in a good deal. (There is an
acoustic I've got the hots for, and I am tired of hearing--how many
12-strings do you need?)
