Gear Report - Picks

Dick Messick (flatwound01) - 04 Jan 2003 17:13:24

A while back, there was a thread about picks - in that discussion,
Dano mentioned that he uses EBE heavys. I got a dozen for
Christmas, and wonder if I'll ever use them all. More likely, I'll
lose them before they wear out . . . these things are amazing!
The pick I've been using since Christmas shows absolutely NO wear!
I had been using Dunlop Tortex heavys, and they usually start to
show their age after a week or so of use. They feel really nice, too.
I like these things - thanks, Dano!

Where the heck can I get some of these? I've checked
several music places I've happened to walk into since
hearing about these and haven't found 'em yet.

Any of these picks you'd recommend in particular?
I've heard one vote for the alien picks. I'll
probably buy a bunch since I'm almost out of Fender
picks.

Well the alien ones glow in the dark....thats a good enough gimmick for me!
:)
I have one of these and also recommend them. I wish it was just a tad
thicker...they only go up to .96 mm.
I'll probably break down and buy a dozen sometime soon.

Just my two cents on picks: I use to play pretty heavy Dunlop Picks
(.96)But a few months back I saw Slacktone in Austin, anyways,I
managed to get a customized Slacktone pick from Dave and it was
pretty thin. So one day I tried it out, "Thinking the Shwartz was
with me," and I love the flexibility. I found a Jim Dunlop .53 pick
called "Fins" Check em out, one side is well rounded great for trem
picking while the other side has a more acute point. They're awesome.

I think they are copies of the swedish Sharkfin picks,
which I have been playing for over ten years. They are
the only picks which done fly out of my hand.

If you are after a pick that wont come off your hands, and are not
afraid of trying something new, give the F1 pick a test run.
A bit strange feeling at first but after a day or two you can't go
back to the old style ones...
I found them at Guitar Center.

I had to check out the link - and read the testimonials. Couldn't help but
notice, so I gotta ask . . . Gavin, is that you? ;)
If so, what do you think of the F1's? Does it help with trem picking?

Hey Bo!
That F1 looks pretty weird. Does it clip over your finger? Did you
see the SX-1 "Surf Rocker"? Might have to try those out. Do you use
the F1 exclusively now?
Thanks,

Brian,
I used the F1 and the SX-1 for awhile...they were great for me as a
beginner. I even endorsed them on the Big Rock site. Very precise.
However, as I got better, I found them not so good. Too flimsy for
serious surf picking and noisy as hell.
The F1 is taco shaped, so it has a groove that holds it neatly in
place. The SX1 has "wings" attached to a kidney-shaped pick. The wings
are at 90 degrees to the pick, just where the middle bone of your
finger lays. The wings work pretty good, but sometimes you want to
slip the pick a little in your fingers to get a different attack, and
with these, you can't. So, it's a mixed bag.
I'm back to using reliable ol' Fender 351 heavies and mediums. I'd be
happy to send you an SX-1 Surf Rocker, if you want one.
P.S. If you call Big Rock, tell 'em I sent you. They seem to like me,
and I did the photographs for some of their promo materials.

Brian,
You hold it exactly like you hold a standard pick. The only
difference is that the part that touches your index finger is not flat
but rather curved to fit the shape of the finger. I really like them
a lot.
I have not tried the Surf Rocker one, however.
