Need New Amp...

windanseabeachboy - 03 Jan 2003 22:54:38

There's two types of posters on this site...those who make do with
inexpensive gear, and those who value vintage. I'm one of the former.
I play a Strat thru a Hot Rod Deluxe and a reissue 62 Outboard Reverb
and get a pretty good sound. Mods include a Weber California 12"
speaker for the HRD and NOS tubes all-around. It sounds good, real
surfy, but lacks the really great tones that Dano, Mel, and others get
with the more original Jag/Jazzmaster, Showman or Dual Reverb, and
vintage reverb units. But at less than one-third the cost...I think a
DeVille with dual 12" Webers would sound great, but haven't had a
chance to try that out.
I'm hoping we'll be able to start a "tone library," wherein one can
compare various rigs. Mel got a great start with his Jazzmaster/Jaguar
page (see earlier posts, & thanks to Mel!), but it would be nice to
compare lots of equipment, including guitars, amps, reverb units,
etc., in combination.
Of course, there's no "perfect" surf sound - I know a rockabilly cat
from Denver who plays a Gretsch hollowbody thru a reissue reverb unit
and a Fender amp (can't remember which one) who gets a fantastic surf
sound. The band is Paul Galaxy and the Galactics.
Anyway, I'm sure more knowledgeable people will weigh in on this topic.
Gavin
