I agree whole-heartedly. Read as much as you can:
recording techniques, microphones, acoustics...etceteras..
Amazon and Barnes and Nobles both have good books on the
subject. There are also webpages and webgroups devoted to
this topic. Forums such as SG101 are a great source of
recording information (thanks Phil and Jonathan and all the
rest!).
I'd like to recomend a periodical: "Tape Op" magazine.
"Tape Op" offers bi-monthly articles aimed at studio
engineers and others interested in the art/science of sound
capture and manipulation.

Bold Techniques".
I expect it to come handy if I ever will be involved in any outta-
space-studio-project :-)
