JBL speaker review

dsurkis1 - 28 Dec 2002 08:32:37

Thanks to some tips from folks in the group, I picked up a JBL K120
for my fender deluxe reverb re-ish. Some of you know this already, but
the JBLs rule for surf music. Loud, clean and bright but without the
death ray, piercing brightness that I got with the stock eminence or
my Weber C12N. No problem keeping up volume wise with Kevin's drums or
Jim's 100W Ampeg rocket bass (a way cool amp). A bit less bass than
the other speakers, but seems to completely compensated for by bumping
the bass control up a couple clicks.
A big plus for me is the looks to. I had Rogers amps make a new
oxblood covered baffle board with 4 studs for the DRRI. Now with the
cream tolex, oxblood grill and the big JBL silver dome peeking
through, it kind of looks like a baby version of an early 60s showman
set up. Also the cast frame / cast iron pot cover looks of the speaker
its self makes wussy stamped basket drivers run for thier momma.
FYI the K120 is very similar to the D120 or D120F(the 60s, 70s
factory upgrade speaker used in twins)it is a bit more durable due to
a cloth rather than a paper surround.
Only negatives I experienced were these
- expensive (paid $200)
- hard to find (obsolete for many years)
- heavy (14lbs, brought my DRRI from 40 to 46lbs)
One more warning. Know who you are buying from or buy
protected(credit card)! Mine came with a slight, but annoying voice
coil buzz. The L.A. music store (who won't take credit cards) I bought
the JBL from swore the speaker was in top condition with no problems.
They refuse to do anything about it now.
Has anyone heard one of these compared to the Weber Cali? Just
curious.
best
Dan

I have two K120's - we A/B'd them to a D120 and a Weber Cali w/o
aluminum dust cap. we could not hear any difference between the K and
the D. the JBL was much clearer than the Weber
