Of Surf and Ventures

mattcrunk - 17 Oct 2005 09:11:25

You know, for the Ventures not to have been a Surf band, they (and their
sound) sure get discussed a lot on this list. Surf or not, they remain one of my
all time favorite instrumental groups.

I considered The Ventures to be a surf band when I was
a kid because the only tunes I really knew were "Walk
Don't Run" and "Hawaii Five-0" and they appeared on
all the surf comps I listened to. Most people know
these songs even if they don't know they're The
Ventures. They're not technically a surf band because
they predate it and thus were instrumental (your bad
pun of the day) in shaping what it became. And they
continued playing on up 'til this day. Long live The
Ventures.

Matt,
hey not trying to start a flame war, and it has basically already
been said what the Ventures were.
But I just thought of this.
What surf band would do whole albums of the Carpenters or the Jim
Croce songbooks???
Not that its bad playing or anything. but just about the
furthest thing from Surf I can think of.
Yes the Ventures did alot of surf influenced music, and influenced
alot of surf musicians. But they themselves are the first to say
they are not a surf band.
I do have about 20 Ventures cd's and some vinyl, but they aren't
the first thing I reach for when I wanna hear surf.

Gosh, what surf bands would contribute to whole albums of Jesus Christ
Superstar covers? Of Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass covers? Of Henry
Mancini covers?
It's not so much what you play. It's HOW you play/arrange it and the
energy/emotion you put into it that's perhaps a bit more meaningful here.

John,
I hope you weren't implying that I was being a hipocrite( sp)
by saying that about those tribute albums, because I'm sure you have
seen me talk about many of those in the past, and I am a fan of surf
bands doin' other style stuff.
I was just trying to point out how the Ventures were way more than
a surf band, and didn't want to be pigeonholed as such.

No implications at all intended by my post, Jeff. Just trying to point out
how generalized statements about an art form can often be futile.
We all have the inclination to categorize and label everything (there are
more hyphenated categories of rock music than there are holes in Albert
Hall). In terms of surf music, there seems to be a tendency to pigeonhole
BANDS (and, by implication, their entire recorded output) into the
category. Of course there are some bands that can easily be described as
surf bands. That's all they do. That's the content of their entire
recorded output. This is especially true today. But, when the discussion
centers around the sixties, it makes more sense, IMO, to talk about
specific recordings.
That said, consider The Ventures' original recording of "Walk Don't Run"
(1960, before surf music's defining moments a year later) and their
self-cover, "Walk Don't Run '64." Is this a surf band or is this simply a
great rock instrumental band who did some surf-styled recordings. Might
also want to listen to their "Spudnik" and then "Surf Rider" from their
"Surfing" album.
For my money, it's the recordings, themselves, and not so much the bands
that should be under the microscope here.

I didn't intent to come across like my feathers were getting ruffled by the
Ventures comments, just in case that's how it seemed.
Truth is I like the Ventures and would like them no matter what their music
was called. Just a little surprised that they weren't really considered surf,
but after the explanation I can now see why that's so.
But I'm the last one to be hung up on labels or genres, except for
clarification purposes. Heck all my public performances of late have been
exclusively
on homemade cigar box guitars. What would you call that? While I love surf as
a genre, I have never played it in a band situation, and am looking forward
to doing so in the near future. Glad to be a part of this list. It's been
learning experience already.
