Powerblock revisited

mono_tones_1 - 17 Oct 2005 08:42:29

guys,
short update on the crate powerblock - on Bruce's and Marty's advice
(and after some offlist tips from Bruce - thanks) I ordered the Crate
Powerblock.
though reviewed before, I am posting this because i use it with
different cab, a single 8 ohm JBL D140F.
It's every bit as good as claimed before. It's not a blackface preCBS
showman, and you can hear the difference - BUT .... it gets a
helluvalot closer then many silverface amps I've heard.I've tested it
against my blackfaced '71 bassman, through an identical cab with
identical speaker, in band situation. it combines with the d140f very
well
the bassman had a bit more tube warmth, but just a nose length
the crate gets louder, the 'breakup edge' is more managble. also, the
low end is lot tighter.
overall, the crate has a more transparent sound. that resulted in
that i liked the bassman better just listening to it, but in a the
band situation, the crate cut through slightly better.
the math:
powerblock E240, D140F, E100, empty ´Fender´ cab E40... total 380
Euros. for a very convincing vintage Fender sound.
these are european prices. please consider that a blackface showman
went for 1000 and then some euros yesterday on german ebay, without
the cab. a late ´70 135 watt twin will still catch up to 700 euros,
and ´real´ twins get more.
if you don´t mind an amp that looks like an alarmclock, this is an
awesome option.
WR
