Surf music in Europe

ipongrac - 16 Oct 2005 18:26:38

I just checked out the websites of some of my favorite surf bands
around right now. It's just wonderful how many of them are from
Europe right now. To all the surf music fans out there, don't be
afraid to check out Euro surf music - I think it's among - if not
thee - the very best anywhere today. I'd especially recommend the
Bambi Molesters, the Phantom Four, the Beat Tornados and El Ray, but
there are so many other great bands, such as the the Bitch Boys, the
Kilaueas, Los Twang! Marvels, Langhorns (are they still together?),
etc. I don't know if this is the golden era of Euro surf, cause
after all, there was a lot of great surf music from Europe in the
nineties, but it certainly seems that the golden era at least
continues. In addition, surf bands seem to get a lot more respect
in Europe than they do in the US. Just check out the gigs - both
quantity and quality - that Euro surf bands get. (Maybe cause
they're such sharp dressers? Better than the Americans, for sure!)
Anyway, just felt compelled to bring this up. Congratulations to
our European brethren - keep it up!

Ivan,
thank you so much!
(LOL - I had nothing to do with it, I swear)
Seriously, you are right, Europe has so many great surf bands, I
can't keep track. Of the bands you mentioned, I guess bitch boys and
phantom four are my favorites. Someone should really try to get the
Phantom Four to the States, because seeing them live is such a blast,
really. (and Phantom Frank is a helluva sharp dresser, with his bald
head, black suit and flamenco boots, he could play the titty
twister 'till dawn without the blink of an eye).
Some other great bands you might want to check out:
more 'fun instrumentals with organ' then surf, but very very funny
music and an awesome live show
trad sound to every detail - tho i must say they're better live than
on cd. their tone live is awesome.
mariachi surf punk

PS, we are opening for El Ray in a few weeks - yup, we are very
excited!

LOL!! I suspect that the Phantom Four CD is gonna stir up quite a
ruckus in the surf music community! It would be fantastic to get
them over here.

Very good band, I really enjoy their debut CD. In fact, your post
inspired me to dig it out this morning, and I've been listening to
it all day. I can see how they would be even better live, though.

Yes, let's not forget the Mono-Tones! Don't be shy, Wannes! You
can find info about them here:
The stuff I heard by them is very good (check out the songs on the
website). So, when will you actually officially release something?
A full-CD? We're waiting!

Jeez, Ivan, thanks.
but really - our biggest claim to fame is that our song Tarantinula
(which is on the site) gets played in our local hang out club on a
regular basis and gets a full dance floor every time. for the rest, I
don't consider us to be even near the league of most bands on the
list. I guess from a record-sales - famousness perspective it's
different, but for me, from a surfmusic fan perspective, it's like,
on one side of the line you have the likes of Dick Dale, Bambi-
Molestors, Slacktone, Nebulas, Pollo del Mar etc etc - and on the
other side there's, well, us. The premisses when we started this band
was to make music we fully enjoyed, play with established friends,
have fun rehearsals, and, if possible, play some gigs. We never
intended to "make it" or to achieve the extraordinary professional
level so many of "you guys" (that includes you, Ivan, of course),
other then maybe if it ever comes naturally.
So, when will you actually officially release something?

a full cd is in the pipeline. material is ready. after some
deliberations, we decided that most fun for ourselves was to be had
if just fool around with everything ourselves rather then go into an
existing studio. So, rather then spend our already limited budget on
the mediocre studio it would buy, we spent our money on buying stuff
to expand our limited non pro level 'home' studio, and record songs
our selves. we're experimenting with getting the sounds as good as we
can now (in the limited time we've got weekly) and will do the real
recordings early spring 2006. the result will most likely be a 30 to
45 minute cd with mostly originals, with a mediocre at best
production quality, but not that much worse then what the cheap
studio we could afford alternativly would get us (bad experiences
with those) - but not the professional standard that i see with most
bands. BUT ... we will have had a lot of fun in the process (we
allready are).

And to think, that if it wasn't for the Boston Tea Party and all that
followed from that, you'd still be part of it! ;-)
