[SurfGuitar101] Re: Surf Literature

DP (noetical1) - 12 Oct 2005 23:18:43

Eric:
Besides John Blair's "Illustrated Discography..." and Bob
Dalley's "Surfin' Guitars", I'd like to reccomend a couple
others:
1. You mentioned Dick Dale's biography..."SurfBeat: The
Dick Dale Story " by Stephen J McParland is a cool read.I
bought mine from Ferenc's online store. It's an Australian
book from CMUSIC Books New South Wales...I bet you can
find one out there on the Internet somewhere, or maybe
Ferenc can chime in and let you know where to locate one.
2. I hope I don't get 'booo-ed' off SG101 for this one but,
here goes: "The Nearest Faraway Place: Brian Wilson, the
Beach Boys and the Southern California Experience." by
Timothy White. Henry Holt and Company, NY 1994. The book IS
about the Beach Boys...but, it offers a fascinating look
into the late 40s-mid 60s Southern California cultural
"scene" that fostered and catalyzed the Surf Explosion of
1960-1965. An awesome read! Dick Dale and Paul Johnson and
many others at Capitol Records and at various SoCal radio
stations and promoters are mentioned throught the first
half of the book. Ed Roth is in there too..."Drag" music
was something the Beach Boys latched onto like they latched
on to "Surf"...don't forget...they did do a swell version
of 'Miserlou'...
happy reading,
-dp
