Eric Hutchinson (ehutch247) - 12 Oct 2005 18:05:34

I was just curious to see if anyone had recommendations for books on the
history of surf music, culture, or biographies, etc... Thanks.
P.S. Is anyone else received replied messages before receiving the original
email? I'm getting that a lot.

The King County Library System has Jon Blair's surf discography. I
suggest you check it out.

John Blair's Discography book and Bob Dalley's Surfin Guitars are great
documents. Although there are rumors of various projects being
undertaken to document the modern era, the market remains limited.
The Yahoo Surf-related groups give an up to date account of goings on
and you can look into history by studying the archives. Reverb Central
is the modern reference "book" about the art, although it does little to
chronicle the culture and scene. For that,
Periodicals from Double-Crown and other scenes reviewers in the Surf
community serve to fill the gap. Surf sometimes gets co-opted by punk
garage 'zines on the newsstand, but I don't ever see a Surf-dedicated
rag in wide distribution.
Good luck. It's an unserved need.

I actually used to own a copy of The illustrated Discography, I was
primarily looking for reading material when I have some down time at
work, mostly for the history of it rather than any current
trend/news.
There was mention awhile back about DD's biography, perhaps even a
by a couple different author's. How about that?

"Surf Beat - The Dick Dale Story" can be found here (together with
many other surf music related books):
A cool book on the surfing culture is "Surfing - Vintage Surfing
Graphics" which is full of pictures, posters and adverts. It's quite
cheap too:

Wasn't Carl about 15 when he recoreded Miserlou? And as I remember, the track
was pretty dry, but had that awesome Jaguar/blonde Showman tone......a lot of
raw energy......ok by me.....ed

John:
I think it's interesting that the Beach Boys selected
"Miserlou" to cover...a Dick Dale 'standard tune'...sort of
shows the impact of "Surfer's Choice" on the young early
60s California surf-psyche and culture.

Don't forget Stephen McParland's many books on the subject of surf music:
I strongly recommend:
"Beach, Street & Strip"
"Sound Waves & Traction"
"Surf Beat -- The Dick Dale Story" (the most comprehesive overview of
Dale's career that's been written)
Besides these, Stephen has written several specifically focused books on
The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean for die-hard fans. Anybody interested in the
history of surf music should have at least one of McParland's books on the
bookshelf. His contributions to the history of the music are immense.
If you want to keep up on current surf music CDs and reissues, check out
the fanzines "Pipeline" and "New Gandy Dancer." And, if you're a major
Ventures' fan, there's "The Ventures Resurgence" fanzine.
The truth is out there....

I hate to sound like a salesman, but I'd like to throw
my own hat into the ring:
Besides the Bob Dalley and Jon Blair books, the other
place that I found the most information on the true
original surf manifesto of Southern California (and
abroad) came from Domenic Priore's Dumb Angel
Gazette's, and his outside writing for other mags and
liner notes. About four years ago, I asked him to
revive Dumb Angel, as sort of an annual/almanac/book
reader, which we have -- Dumb Angel #4: All Summer
Long. Featured chapters include:
* Tracing of the surfing sound through independent
surf cinema of the '50s.
* Dick Dale 1961-63
* A Peter Frame Family Tree map of all of the South
Bay surf bands.
* A look at the Harmony Park Ballroom vs. the Retail
Clerks Hall surf revialry (featuring the Del-Tones,
the Showmen, the Surf-Tones and other surf
instrumental giants)
* Plus, Brian Wilson, Phil Spector, the original
"Surfer" magazine artists, exotica and a final chapter
on the stock surf and exploitation surf LPs from
1963-64.
I hope you all will take a look at our website --

Hang 10!

Thanks for the tips on the material everyone. I'll check out the
suggestions, however, i don't see myself getting "surfin' guitars' in the
near future, as the sticker price is a little high for me, a used copy at
$149, ouch.
