TOP TEN Surf Albums of all time?

mattcrunk - 11 Oct 2005 09:51:02

Pardon me if this territory has been covered before, or at least recently,
but being new here I'd like to see the answers this list comes up with.
Please list, in your opinion, what you consider the TEN best/most essential
surf albums of the classic surf area - the "must haves" for anyone's
collection. Thanks.
Also, if you care to - add a list of the top ten contemporary surf albums as
well.

Sounds like an opportunity to do a poll using the Yahoo tools.

I tried that but it could not find a way to make the poll work in a way that
would allow you to name your own choices, only to choose between a set
number of pre-existing ones set by the poll's creator.

Ah ha.
Market feedback for Yahoo (if I only knew where to send it).
OK, well, I'll nominate a relatively non-controversial one:
* Cowabunga: The Box Set

It seems like this topic was just covered recently in a slightly different
format.
Anyway I'll nominate the Lost Legends of the Surf Guitar series on Sundazed. All
four of
them are great!
Well, I don't have the fourth one yet, but it's got to be good!

For the modern era,
I would nominate
The Aquavelvets- The Aquavelvets
The Mermen - Krill Slippin'
Slacktone- Into The Blue Sparkle
Space Cossacks- Interstellar Stomp
The Blue Hawaiians- Sway
J&TN- Fiberglass Rocket
The Nebulas- Nebula One
The Eliminators- Unleashed
Los Straitjackets- Utterly Fantastic...
The Halibuts- Life On The Bottom
Surf Coasters- Miserlou,10th Anniversay Best
There's many more nominees, and I'm sure I've missed some "Oh yeahs!",
but
I'd like to understand what the criteria for choosing the TOP album is?
Subjective? Record sales? # weeks on the charts, etc. Usually ends up
being subjective, so...
My picks are simply based on the "must haves"/Desert Island Discs
criteria. No one should be without records like these in their
collections, almost regardless of tastes.

in the 'first wave' were there any really produced
surf albums, that were more or less more 'album like'
in the repect to records in the mid 60's ( revolver,
pet sounds, etc...) you know where the whole album was
kind of considered one complete thought ( sorry, very
hard to explain, you get the drift ). i almost want to
say 'concept album'.
the only thing i can think of that comes close is 'the
lonely surfer' by nitchze
todays examples i would argue would be stuff like
mermen 'glorious lethal' ( maybe thier whole catalogue
), space cossacks 'interstaller stomp', some moam
etc...

I would say they are really produced compared to today's surf albums.
But, compared to the records of the '60s no way.

Well, by album I simply mean LP, as opposed to singles. I guess record would
have been a better word, but that can also mean 45s.
I know the true concept album didn't really occur until the late 60s, but I
do remember having a Jan & Dean "album" as a child on which one entire side
was snipets of live recordings intertwined with a lot of studio tricks and
just plain goofing around into a microphone. That's sort of a concept I guess.
Don't remember the name of it now. Wish I did.

Matt,
I'm definitely not the best person to classify something as a must have, but in
terms of which albums I listen to the most, here, in no particular order, are my
picks.
Classic:
Randy Holden (Fender IV) - Early Works '64-'66
Dick Dale - Surfer's Choice
Jim Messina & the Jesters - The Dragsters
Ventures - Live in Japan '65
Trashmen - Live Bird '65-'67
Eddie & the Showmen - Squad Car
Sentinals - Big Surf
V/A - Rare Surf Vol. 1, 2 & 3
Original Surfaris - Bombora
V/A - Diggin' Out
Modern:
Satan's Pilgrims - Creature Feature
Surf Coasters - Surfdelic
Slacktone - s/t
Pollo Del Mar - The Golden State
Jon & the Nightriders - Raw & Alive '98
Space Cossacks - Tsar Wars
Mermen - Live at the Haunted House
Nebulas - Nebula One
Treblemakers - Vs. the Doomsday Device
Man or Astroman - Experiment Zero

I really don't like doing these kind of things because I like so many
groups. But...in the modern category you really need to include some
Satan's Pilgrims (either Creature Feature or their self-titled release
on MuSick), Volcanos (I like Finish Line Fever a tad more than Surf
Quake), and Bambi Molesters (this one is hard...maybe Dumb Loud Hollow
Twang Deluxe). And then there is The Penetrators "Locked &
Loaded"...Jon & The Nightriders...Space Cossacks...Nebulas..Surf
Coasters..Laika & The Cosmonauts..Husky & The Sandmen..Treble
Spankers...Treblemakers..Bomboras....ughh..you see how this goes
downhill fast? And I am sure I am forgetting many others. :)
I was just listening to the Volcanos today. Wow...holy crap...I am not
understating things by saying I would not be who I am today if it
wasn't for this band. Okay, maybe a little, but dang...they rule! If
you are ever feeling a bit down, just listen to Finish Line Fever...it
will recalibrate you in no time.
BN
PS And I know it sounds like I'm kissing ass since there are members
from some of the above groups on this very list...but hey, they joined
of their own volition! And I pinch myself every night...

Not really surf, but easily appreciated by the Surf crowd is The
Ventures In Space (1963). I think that was ahead of it's time and has
a kind of concept album feel to it.

I by no means have a large selection of albums, however, in no certain
order save perhaps the first.
The Space Cossacks- Tsar Wars
The Bambi Molesters- Dumb Loud Hollow Twang Deluxe
Jon & the Night Riders-Fiberglass Rocket
The Surf Coasters- Surfdelic
Slacktone- Into the Blue Sparkle
The Nebulas- It's Go Time!
Man or Astro-Man?- Destroy all Astromen
The Varatones- Jetty Subject to High Surf
It is only 8 but those are all I want to list without listing bands a
second time and I could since all those bands ahve atleast two great
releases. Save the Varatones, I think. If they have a second album I
haven't heard it.
I am also a big fan of Eddie and the Showmen- Squad Car CD, and the
Jim Messina and the Jesters compilation CD. I have their original LP
as well.

Exactamundo! Semantic error. My bad. I DID mean the Miles Corbin gang.
Aqua Velvets.
Sorta like yeah, I meant Straitjackets, not Straight Jacket like that
metal band from Albany.

Very good point, Brian.
The subjectivity of choosing the "hard examples" to fit in a confined
list is very strenuous for a fan.
Which is why I admire Mr Blair's efforts with Rhino on Cow: The Box Set
to narrow down specific songs.
Stated another way, could you ever just pick a single Beatles album as
their best? or to head off to a deserted island with? No wonder the "Red
Album" of #1s did so well, eh?
The same would be true of the bands in Brian's post...all great bands,
but which specific album of theirs represents a top Surf album of all
time?
Makes me think a Cow Box II: Modern era (for singles) would be easier,
because you'd have more groups represented, but some deserving names
would still get left off that list too.
It's a tough one.

Thanks, Jeff.
I thought Warren's stab at it was also pretty good. Note some similar
band choices yet maybe different examples nominated. That says a lot
about those bands' consistency.
I don't think we'd get a lot of identical lists from the fans, but it
wouldn't surprise me to see a sizable percentage of commonality in band
picks, if not actual albums. The crème de la crème become pretty
obvious.
