Re: Piano Bass (was Organ Sound for Surf Music...)

Jonathan Villegas (jville.geo) - 09 Oct 2005 01:45:35

Hey DP,
Fender's "Piano Bass" (I've an early '70s Fender
catalog that shows this) actually predates the Rhodes
piano with production starting in 1960 and ending
around 1979. The Piano Bass allowed dweeby keyboard
players to cover the bass resulting in fewer gigs for
bass players.
A Piano Bass, no matter how well-played, is no match
for a "Jaco Pastorius" or a "Carol Kaye", or a "Victor
Wooten", or a "Paul McCartney" etc., etc....

Jon:
Thanks for the info...so the Fender Rhodes appeared
around
the end of The Doors and during Stevie Wonder's
early-funk
years? I will have to look into that. Any idea when
the
Fender Keyboard Bass came on line? I know Ray Manzarek
of
the Doors relied upon it, I wonder if anyone earlier
utilized it?

And,
even as good as Ray Manzereck of the Doors was at Playing the Piano
Bass/Organ. The Doors would have a real Bass player on obut half
or 2/3rd of the studio track they recorded.

Jon/Jeff:
Yeah, I hear you re: the lameness of "piano bass" when
compared to "real bass player".
With the Doors in particular, I always enjoy the difference
between Ray Manzareks "left hand" bass player (Break on
Through) to the real-deal bass player (LA Woman)
Any use of the Fender Piano Bass in the surf world that
anyone knows about? It is an interesting instrument, I
wonder how it would sound in a reverberated setting?
