Neal:
Have you considered the microphone? What kind of mic are
you using to capture the guitar sound? I use a Sure
SM57...not the most expensive or "best" mic ever
produced...but it does a decent job capturing good guitar
tone.
I place the mic off-axis about 3 inches away from one of my
12" speaker cones. Fender Bassman volume at about 4. Full
effects through the amp: reverb and tremelo. Sometimes I
add a second mic far away for an additional "ambient room"
track. I get additional "highs" and natural room
reverbration that way.
I believe the "mastering" step of the recording process is
crucial for decent digital sound. I find I have to adjust
the overall mix balance (EQ) and overall compression (ie:
'fake' tape compression) to get the final sound I am after.
The sound I am usually shooting for is "early 60s AM
radio/ 45 rpm" style sound...except I prefer a stereo final
mix to a mono final mix. Currently, I have been messing
around with a "surround" style mix...like the mixes found
on DVD surround sound...wacky stuff.
good luck,
-dp

hey DP,
well i live in an apartment in new york, so i cant
really amp it up. WHich is why i go DI with amp
modelers. I use to use the POD, but well i think im
figuring out that i dont like it. Now i use a
behringer mixer straight to the PC, where i run NI
Guitar Rig.
on 'chandlier rock' for the comp, i used the POD,
actually as a 'tube pre amp' that ran into Guitar Rig.
That was the first week i had just got guitar rig, and
all my levels were way up accounting for the extra
muddiness. I didnt realize every liitle thing had its
own gain knob. But those guitars are pretty
characterisitc.
Im gonna try to post some reverberated riffs, and see
what people thing of the overall recording quality, to
see how it differs from what there use to hearing
from recorded guitars. Hopefully you can take a listen
to.

Neal,
Try running your Pod into a tank reverb, then ito the
board

Neal:
I did "silent studio" for years with my Fostex
4-track...one caution, mind the headphone volume...it'll
kill the old eardrums, for sure.
In your situation, the mixdown and "mastering" phase of
your recording process will be crucial to achieving your
best sound.
best wishes,
-dp
ps: I will definately be interested in hearing your project
recordings...I love to hear the results of everyones trials
and tribulations when it comes to capturing the magic of
reverb.
