Hi All:
I was mistaken...the Dave 'Baby' Cortez organ song I had in
mind was 1959s "Peppermint Twist" (from his album 'Happy
Organ')...not "Peppermint Man"...
I wonder if Cortez' 1962 hit "Rinky Dink" has any SoCal
surf relevance...wasn't the Rinky Dink a hangout down in
Newport/Balboa? Cortez' tune is probably all about roller
skating and roller rinks...that's where I always heard
it...at the roller rink.
I realise that not all instrumental music is a "surf
precursor", but many of the instrumental hits that shared
the same AM airwaves back in 1960-1965 DID influence surf
music and musicians and "surf" audiences. Record buyers at
the time (60-65) seemed to have eclectic tastes...
annectdotes from people who were young record buyers during
those years leads me to believe that many many strands of
instrumental (and vocal) music influenced "surf" proper.
warmest regards,
-dp

Dave "Baby" Cortez (David Cortez Clowney) was from Detroit. He was a
pop and R&B keyboardist. As John Blair already said, Cortez's surf
connection is nada!
Rinky Dink was a common phrase, like Mickey Mouse.
