Dick Dale used to own a home at "The Wedge" on Channel Road at east
Oceanfront in Newport Beach. It was & still is a spectacular home.
When I was a kid I rode my bike by his house all the time hoping to
see him but never did. Divorce, health & some legal issues claimed the
house if my memory is correct.
Dick's old pad at The Wedge (The Newport Harbor Jetty) was
a turn-of-the-century Spanish/California/Colonial style
masterpiece: "The Gillette Mansion". (Named after
safety-razor tycoon Gillette)...
In th 80s, Dick had his DD motorhome, his Jaguar XJS, and
his big-ass black Lincoln Town Car all parked in the
driveway...
Everytime we walked by with our boogieboards we'd yell
"DICK!" and hope that he'd poke his head out or
something...he never did.

Well, clueless dolt that I am, I never realized that Dick's house was
at The Wedge. BUT, my first date with Carol, my wife of 28 years, was
there in '73. Good memories and a great song. How many fins did you
lose there :)

I lost 3 pair till I figured out I could use shoe laces to tie them
around my ankles. I had a fwe first dats at the wedge too. It used to
be really dark down there.
I would hang out at the Wedge in the 1980s...but, by then,
they would send a couple of searchlight helicopters over to
brighten things up and encourage people to leave. The Wedge
officially "closed" at sunset...but, how can you help being
there after dafk when the grunion are running?
good times at the Wedge!

ps: I never lost a fin there...but, I nearly sanded off a
nipple on the sudden-bottom effect...a face-plant into the
bottom while boogie-boarding at the Wedge...now that's real
California-style surf for you!
