I'm looking for a good choice for a small practice/home/recording amp
that's good for surf. I was thinking a Princeton Reverb, maybe with a
12" speaker added.
How does a Champ or Vibro Champ sound with a Reverb Unit running
through it?
Thanks,
Steven

Rick of SCOTS once recommended Ampeg Reverb Rockets to
me, there are even re-issues of several models around.
I once tried one of those and it was quite good.
For a more british/Shadows type sound you can buy new
Vox AC 15s, equipped with a single 12'' Blue Bulldog.

The best small amp for surf has been my quest all year. I am very
happy with the fender 65 deluxe reverb re-issue. The reverb is great!
The tone is classic fender. It's only 40lbs and it fits in my trunk
with lots of other stuff. It's only 22watts, but I just wind it up and
gig with it - even outside!
I tried the reverb o rocket in the store. Great amp. delicious
reverb! Bottom end was a bit lean sounding to me. I also used a hotrod
deluxe for a few weeks. Just couldn't get quite the tone I wanted.
Reverb was good, but a little short of surf city.

How could I forget! I used a pre CBS champ for almost 25 years before
I went amp shopping this summer. I used a home made outboard tank
(Thomas organ mate?).
Nice fendery tone. No bass. I've played small rooms with it, but 6
watts is 6 watts. forget it for really playing out.

my 2 cents:
If you want to make a good investement, buy a CLEAN Ampeg
Reverberocket. not a reissue, but an old one, with knobs on top (tone
control only) or a Reverberocket 2 (knobs on the front, includes
bass and treble). some of these amps have 7591A power tubes, which
are now available
these amps are actually bigger than a deluxe reverb, so they are not
small - the prices are on the way up, if you are an ebay follower.
I have a Reverberocket 2. the stock CTS speaker sounded good, but I
wanted more volume. after trying a JBL which sounded brittle and
hard, I put in an EVM12.
THIS AMP ROCKS. Up to 6 it stays clean, and is loud enough for
small (party) surf gigs. the Reverb and Tremelo are waaaaaaay better
than Black Face Fender, and if you go past 6 you will hear the sweet
overdrive of 7591A tubes, making this a really hip amp for Blues also.
Buy one of these now and watch your investement grow and stay away
from the circuit board reissues (anyone see Greg Gagliano's article in
the current 20th Century Guitar?)
if you really want small, I would go Princeton Reverb, but you'll pay
more for one of them than an Ampeg
Boulder Bob

P.S. The Gemini Ampegs are also really good, and are not as expensive
as Reverberockets.
