Bruce,
2 things for ya.
Sorry I didn't see your post. I'll have to go back and look for
it.
And it seems every time this topic comes up. You say Jorgen
Ingman did it first, and the Shadows covered it.
I may be wrong, But I think you got that backwards.
anybody got the timeline on who and when for this song?

The Shadows released Apache around July 1960 in the UK. Ingmann's
release was 1961 in the US I'm pretty sure. I could not track down
record dates of either, nor confirm actual release dates.

I seem to recall reading someplace that The Shadows were hosed by
their record company which resulted in Ingmann's version being
released first in the USA. The down side of old age, the memory goes...

BTD,
I don't recall saying that either Ingmann OR The Shadows did it first! Fact is,
the first recording of Apache was done by Burt Weedon, another legendary Brit
guitarist who managed to survive and prosper from the swing/big-band era, into
the 1950's and 60's. Jerry Lordan, the composer of Apache was so disappointed
in Weedon's very sparse and laid-back take, he told others that Weedon's
version, wasn't the same song he had written!
Whoever recorded it first, the actual release in Europe, was first The Shadows
version, then a few months later, the Ingmann version. It was an unforgiveable
lapse on the part of the Shadows' record company that they didn't send the
record for US distribution until AFTER Ingmann's later-released version was
already on US radio.
Pop music history in the US would have undoubtedly evolved differently had the
Shadows version of Apache been the "official" hit version.
What I did say, was that while I loved Ingmann's version of Apache, when I first
heard the Shadow's version, I was blown away with their innovative treatment of
the song, and felt their version was fueled by pure inspiration. Then again, I
felt kinda the same reaction when I first heard Apache '65 as performed by Davie
Allen and The Arrows!
