Guitar opinion Help please

Mike Gottlieb (mgb76guy) - 04 Oct 2005 15:37:23

Hey Group,
I found a Squier Strat by Fender Crafted in China, SN# CY00125033. I
Think that the earliest Squiers were Hecho en Japan, but are the
CHinese No Good or what its offered for 125.00 with a case so price is
right but if I can't put heavier strings on it, or the group knows
about any horror stories on the squier Strats from CHina please let me
know now.
Thanks homies,
Mike G

I'd be leary of buying a Squire sight-unseen, but if you can play it, you be the
judge. The few
I have had my hands on were like carrot peelers - undressed fret wires that tore
into my
hands. Not uncommon in Colorado, where the dry weather can shrink a guitar neck
by a mm
or so, but a definite sign of poor quality.
That said, there are some Squire owners who are quite happy with them,
regardless of origin.

Thanks for the reply Gavin,
I am looking for a budget guitar, with expensive tastes. My last 2
guitars were a Jazzmaster and a 57 reissue strat. SO I know my
quality, I am never realisticly going to play in a band again, But I
love surf and want to be able to play at home. I also want to be
able to show daughter how to play. I bought her a guitar but she is
a lefty so I am trying to relearn chords the opposite way. I still
have a Bass at home, which was my main instrument but figured a
guitar will be easier for teaching 5 1/2 year old how to do stuff. I
want to encourage her while young.
I will probably end up spending way too much on a guitar because I
hate the taint of cheap except in the wallet. Cash definetely gets
you a better guitar. Not much luck trading my Bass for a guitar
either, so I will probably stay in the hunt.
THanks for your opinion.

Mike,
We've had a couple of Squire Strats (the super cheap $99 "bullet"
hardtails - vintage 2-5 years ago) around the house with no major
issues. Certainly heavy strings have been no problem, and with good
setup they've been quite serviceable. Good deal for the money.

you might also want to check out Richwood strat copies - very cheap,
and i was impressed with the playability of the ones I saw.
they are available with high gloss finish on the neck, which i havent
seen with cheap squiers, and which i personally prefer. I'm all for
try before you buy tho.

Have you looked at the little half-scale guitars Fender makes? They have a
couple at the
local guitar shop, and I always pick them up and play around on them. There are
some
little mini-Schecters, too. The short scale makes them easy to fret, a big plus
for small
Ventures fans and mini Dick heads! I think the guitars go for less than $100 -
don't know
if they have reverse left-handers, tho. I am left handed and play right handed.
Handedness
doesn't seem to be a big consideration when playing, IMHO. I think, if she
learns right, she
can play right. But maybe that's just me. Most lefty are somewhat ambidextrous,
i.e. they
can do some things right handed, too. That's me in golf, hockey and guitar and
hammering nails! So, maybe the handedness isn't such an issue.
Best of luck, hope your girl finds musical inspiration.

Mike ,
Gavin's on the right track here. The Squier "Mini" sells for $99 has
a 22 3/4" neck (same as a a short scale Rickenbacker). Decent
guitar, holds heavy gauge strings fine. Could use better tuners, but
hey....
Also Dean makes a 2 short scale models in the same price range.

The Squier Strat mini was the first guitar I bought for my then 7 year old son,
when he showed an interest in learning.
All I can say is, "Don't Bother!" The Squier Mini wouldn't set-up properly, and
the neck width at nut was close to a Fender "B" neck, WAY too large for my son
to get his hand and fingers around.
Was in another music store and saw these gorgeous sunburst mini-Strats that
actually had Kid-Sized necks! Retail around $129, but regularly sold at
$89-$99. It's the Johnson Mini Strat, and it seemed a lot better in quality,
and it sure got played a lot more than that Squier, which despite the short
scale, was still more an adult's guitar in terms of neck width.

My Squier Bullet Strat was honestly a piece of junk.
I'd shop around for something better for the money.
