Leased masters (was: Bali Ha'i and Pintor)

A leased master is like a bought master except that certain rights are
still retained by the owner of that master. This is sort of what happens
when you contribute a track to a compilation album (you're still allowed to
use that track for other purposes, subject to any contractual stipulations
of course). Generally, leasing a master implies that the artist (or
original record label) retains certain rights; buying a master implies that
no rights are given or implied.
However, I don't claim to be educated in this area at all. As far as the
implications of a leased master might be, I have absolutely no idea.
Perhaps Mel Spinella of Golly gee can chime in and provide a more
appropriate response to this.
