hippies and surf music--apache included

mom_surfing - 03 Oct 2005 15:54:50

two of us had the opportunity to play at an open house at an art
gallery here. we have about 1 1/2 hours of stuff we've worked on that
sounds pretty good. two of our local hippies (50ish woman, 60ish man)
got wind that we were playing and asked the owner if they could play
also. they said they were bringing acoustic guitars. they showed up
with wood flutes. they asked what type of music we were playing. surf
instrumentals we said. beach boys? she said. needless to say they were
totally unfamiliar with most of what we played. imagine if you will
playing 'apache' with a loud obnoxious guy sitting next to you poking
you in the arm, kicking your foot and making up words to the tune with
his lady 'tooting' (my husbands word) some fills. how about more flute
fills with 'slaughter on 10th ave", never mind that it changes keys.
how about having someone next to you singing the chorus to 'secret
agent' as you are playing the verse. several times the flute's
'tooting' was so loud i couldn't hear casey and his amp was right in
front of me. overall it went well and there was a good crowd of over
100, many of whom have told me how much they enjoyed the music. it was
a test of ones patience though..........so maybe i should nominate our
version of 'apache' with flute toots as the best version :) carol
