Shameless book plug: "Black Denim & Bitchen' Sounds"

fiberglassrocket - 29 Sep 2005 17:36:36

The book's subtitle is: "A Musical Appreciation of Female Surf, Hot-Rod and
Related Recordings 1961-1967." This is the latest book from Stephen
McParland (Gary Usher's biographer and publisher of many surf music and
hot-rod music book titles). I read the manuscript of this book early on
and it is, by far, the most exhaustive and detailed treatment ever given to
the women who contributed to the First Wave of surf music. The subject
goes way beyond Gidget, Annette, or The Honeys.
The book is 280 pages with 53 pages of photos (7 in color) and a full
index. You can read more about it and find ordering instructions here
(along with other McParland titles, too):
I strongly recommend this book for anyone with more than a passing interest
in the subject of sixties' surf and hot-rod music. The only criticism one
might have with the book would be that it's too detailed!!! The many
contributions to the genre by women have never been celebrated to this
extent, and I can't imagine anyone ever documenting this subject more
comprehensively than what McParland has done here.

Sounds like a very interesting book since I'm also a big fan of the
early to mid 60's girl group sound!
And John, please keep us updated on any progress for the new editions
of your surf and hot rod discographies.
