Re: [SurfGuitar101] I defense of Bruce Johnston

John McCorvey (eddiekatcher) - 29 Sep 2005 16:03:47

We, as the X-rays, had the honor to open for Mike Love and the Beach Boys at the
INtelos pavllion in Portsmouth, VA several years back. The Beach Boys had
played an earlier show that day at Wolf Trap......well, we were sitting in the
cafeteria about to chow down in the late afternoon before the show, when in
came the Mike Love and crew......As soon a Bruce put down his bag he picked up
his cell phone and called California................for a Surf Report!!!!!!!!.
They were taking several days off and he was planing to head home to do some
surfing!!!! We WERE impressed!!!!!!...........eddie k (hodad)

You can't knock Bruce's success. He's been a mover and shaker for 40
years plus. I think his first session work was in '59 with the Teddy
Bears, or maybe it was the Gamblers' "Moon Dawg" c/w "L.S.D. 25."
Instrumentally, his work can be summarized with one really great track,
and his involvement was as producer, even though it was released in his
name. The fiery guitar is Billy Strange. The song? "Jersey Channel
Islands Part 7."

"Jersey Channel Islands Part 7" is a great track featuring some
interesting early fuzz sounds. I also like many of the other tracks
on the "Surfin' 'Round The World" album including the similar
sounding "Maliblu" (sic). Another cool track is the slow and
moody "Maksha At Midnight". The album also have several great vocal
numbers with girl group sounding backing vocals.
