fender custom shop amps

surfnoir2003 - 17 Sep 2005 20:21:57

I'm thinking very seriously about buying either a Vibroverb or a Vibro
King custom shop amp and I was wondering if anyone on the list has any
experience with these amps.

There was a great litte surf band from Chapel Hill, NC called The
Family Dollar Pharoahs who used Vibro Kings quite successfully. That
group had a truly great sound and some fine originals.
Alas, they're long defunct now. I heard the drummer, Groves, still
tends bar in that town though.

The Vibro King is a great amp, but don't expect it to be real clean.
It's got a crunchy breakup. I'd recommend finding a used Dual
Professional if you're looking for headroom. The Dual Pro is 100 watts
compared to the VK 40 or 60? I'm not sure.
I've never tried a Vibroverb, but I'm pretty sure that one breaks up
as well and I imagine it'll give you that Stevie Ray sound.
In any case with custom shop amps your best bet would be to find one
used if you can, the retail prices are way out of control.
