Love Tractor and the Raybeats (and Lawndale, too)

DP (noetical1) - 16 Sep 2005 15:35:26

Hey Surf-heads:
Did anyone out there ever listen to the band Love Tractor?
I believe they were an early 80s mostly-instrumental group
out of Athens GA. I believe they were in the local Athens
"scene" that produced the the B-52s, REM and others...
Anyone have all of Love Tractor's albums? I have only 2
cassettes...one is a double-album of early 80s instro
tunes, the other is a "promo" cassette with instro tunes
and a way cool cover version of the Gap Band's "You Dropped
a Bomb on Me"...any know of other albums or CDs out there?
I believe I have had those cassettes since 1984...they are
almost played to death. Is Love Tractor still active?
Also, what about the Raybeats? late 70's early 80's
spy/surf/space/pop/eclectic sort of instrumental stuff...
I know they did a mean "Jack the Ripper" cover on their
Shanachee label LP...any other recomendations for the
Raybeats out there? Are the Raybeats still around?
thanks for any help you can provide...I love these obscure
instro bands from the eighties...we owe those folks a lot
more than we often realize...in a way, they kept the "surf
spirit" alive during those dark dark days of '83...
reverberatedly yours,
-dp
PS: I almost forgot about"Lawndale...they were a instro-80s
band from ...you guessed it, Lawndale CA. They were on the
SST label (Minutemen, Meat Puppets,Black Flag, Husker Du,
Saccharine Trust etc)...Are they still around? Did they
only release two albums?...or is there other Lawndale music
out there that I don't know about?

Much of the Ray Beats material has been reissued on CD. Danny Amos went
from the Overtones to the Ray Beats to Los Straitjackets. There was a
solo album by Jody Harris (the other guitarist) that is so-so.
One of Lawndale's LP's was reissued on CD. Rick Lawndale still records
instros as the Rick Lawndale band.
See my site for reviews pf all of this.
