Just curious if any of you folks are into Dexter's stuff. I just
picked up "Blues that Defy My Soul" and "Chased By Martians" and
there's some killer stuff here. Not just the standard
rockabilly/garage but some great instrumental stuff too (including a
killer cover of "Bombora" on "Chased by Martians").
Pardon if Dex may be old hat to you folks, but being a newcomer to his
stuff, I'm blown away - this guy rocks.
I love the Flat Duo Jets! They were lo-fi before lo-fi was cool. And they were a
2-piece just
guitar and drums before that was cool too.

They still play around Athens from what I understand
but I've never had a chance to catch them. The guy's
been around for a long time and I've heard/read varied
reviews from all of his work from different time
periods.

I saw them in the early 90's openning for the Cramps in Detroit. Wow
blew me away.(so did the Cramps )The drummer was one of those guy who
almost sits on the floor.Just his head poping out over the dums, cool
The guitar player was wow. How do you get that much sound out of one
guitar. Ivy and Lux were standing in the wings watching, Yea. Miller

Regarding Dexter and the Flat Duo Jets...
Dexter and Crow had a deal with a big label for a while, back
around '97 or '98, but then everything fell apart after one album --
the deal and the band both collapsed. I understand that Crow refuses
even to speak with Dexter since. I could be way off base here, but
my hunch/impression is that Crow thought they'd finally hit the
bigtime, and Dex somehow blew it for them. (When I interviewed them
both right before the problem developed, Crow was ecstatic about the
money and tour support they were finally getting, but pretty much
all Dex wanted to talk about was his hallucinations of flying
sharks.)
Dex has had several different backing bands since then, sometimes
with more than one musician (even a full band with horns at least
once), but typically he performs with just a drummer (not Crow,
though, of course) and a "dancer." The "dancer" is a whole 'nother
story -- a grotesque man with a Buddah-shaped body who hops around
the stage wearing nothing but a ballcap and a daiper. His oversized
diaper is often artfully stained with globs of Hershey's chocolate
syrup. (I once saw him applying it to his "costume" in the restroom
at the Starlight Six, so I KNOW it's really chocolate.)
When Dex and the dancer performed at Drive-Invasion last year
(supporting Davie Allan & The Arrows), several people -- including
John from Daddy-a-Go-Go -- were so revolted by this display that
they've never been back.

I saw Dex about a month ago at a private party and it was just him
and a drummer. He played his Silvertone guitar-in-a-case guitar thru
a Randall amp and played for 2 hrs straight. He played a couple if
instros but mostly it was lo-fi blues. Crazy screaming and stuff. Wild!
He actually stuck around to see our Deadbolt tribute band. He seemed
to enjoy it as I hear he's a Deadbolt fan.
